The latest buzz...October 29, 2021
A note from Mrs. Stewart
Now that most of our students have returned to school in person, we have decided to restart our Booster Group meetings. For those of you new to Oakwood and our parent group, we used to have a PTA, but right before the pandemic hit, we transitioned to a national Booster Group. We are the Oakwood Booster Group!
Our meetings will be monthly at 4:30 p.m on the Mondays a week after the Brandon School Board meetings. The dates are:
November 22
January 24
February 28
March 28
April 25
May 23
Our Boosters do so much to support our staff and students! In addition to funding field trips, one of the main projects we started to plan for before the pandemic interruption, was to create plans for an outdoor learning center on the grounds here at Oakwood.
In order to do projects and to provide special event opportunities for our students, we need as many of our stakeholders to get involved as possible. Below, there is a survey we would like for parents to complete so that we can rebuild our Booster Club membership and help it to grow and thrive.
Thank you for considering being a part of our parent team!

Important Information and Event Information
Fundraisers ~ I wanted to take a minute to let you all know that there is never an expectation for families to participate in all of our fundraisers. You can do one, two, all, or none. Some people like to donate money to the Booster Group in-lieu of participating in the fundraiser. Some like to donate their time when we need helpers to unload and distribute products that were sold. However you decide to participate and to whatever extent you participate, we appreciate it. ~Coy Stewart
Little Caesars Fundraiser orders ~ The last day to submit orders is November 3.
Clothing ~ In the fall and spring especially our playground can get really muddy! Over the year's, thanks to our Booster Groups paving efforts, it is much improved, but we still have some muddy spots. It is a good idea to send extra clothes in your child's backpack if you know they tend to play hard and have a tendency to get dirty. The office does not have anything above size 8. If you have any gently-worn, elastic-waist sweatpants or leggings in sizes 8-14 you can donate, we will gladly accept!
Save your Bueche's receipts- classroom competition November 29-December 3. ~ You'll notice that your Bueche's receipts have KIDS AMOUNT at the bottom. Collect those receipts because right after Thanksgiving we are going to have a competition to see which class will collect the most receipts! We will have a few more of these competitions throughout the year so be sure to save those receipts in a safe place and be ready for each one!
Marking Period 1 Reporting ~ November 12 is the end of the first marking period. On November 19 you will receive a few items to communicate with you about your child's growth so far this schoolyear. You will receive the NWEA parent report, a Brandon Schools Progress Report, and some will receive a personalized reading intervention plan (IRIP or RIP). If you have any questions about any of these you can ask your child's teacher or contact Mrs. Stewart.
When Students are Sick ~ Please keep your child home when he/she is sick and report absences according to our attendance policies. Promptly pick your child(ren) up or arrange for pick up from school if signs or symptoms of illness are present. Please keep your child home until he/she has been symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. Please be sure to call our office if your child tests positive for COVID-19. You will be asked to follow Oakland County Health Department guidelines until it is safe for your child to return to school.
Medications ~ You might not think of cough drops and sunscreen as medication, but at school, we have to have an over-the-counter medication form completed and those items kept in the office to disperse to kids. Children cannot bring cough drops, antacids such as Tums, sunscreen, etc. to school with them. If you have a need for any of those items or other medications like cold/cough syrups, pain relievers, etc. to be available for your child at school, call the front office and we can set you up with the proper form to complete. After the form is completed an adult can drop the medication in it's original container along with the form in the front office.
Arrival and Dismissal
Transportation Changes ~ When your child has a change in their daily dismissal routine you MUST notify the classroom teacher AND the office. Sometimes teachers are absent and if you email a change, it's possible that no one will ever see it. A handwritten note to the teacher in the green folder is best. Then, follow that up with an email or a phone call to the office. If we don't have communication from a parent or guardian, we go with the usual plan. We do not go by what children are saying about their dismissal changes. To help us get your children where they need to be at the end of each day, please make sure to notify:
1. the teacher
2. the office

Positivity Project ~ Oakwood Elementary is a Positivity Project partner school. Every student in every class learns about the same character traits, at their own level. Click here to see which traits we learn about all year long. This month, students learned about; Open-mindedness, Being present and giving others your full attention, Integrity, Forgiveness, and Creativity. Below, you can see some of our learning about creativity.
Bullying Prevention ~ During the month of October, students learned about bullying, how to advocate for a friend and choosing kindness. As we head into November, the focus on instruction will move to reporting bullying at school. Our mental health support staff will teach class lessons and provide methods for students to anonymously report bullying or potential bullying.
