Principals Message: Holiday Season Festivities
Hello Hawks families,
We are officially in the winter holiday season! (Cue the fun and festive Mariah Carey holiday music!)
While for many of our students and families this time is filled with great joy and love, we also know that so many in our community could use a helping hand this holiday season. We hope that our annual Giving Tree and Christmas Eve Luncheons can help serve our families in need this holiday season. If you are new to our Hawks community but are feeling the burden this winter, please reach out to your students counselor to learn more about these opportunities.
We kick-off December by participating in the City of College Place Festival of Lights Parade! The evening of December 1st at 6:00pm many of our ASB clubs will be participating in the parade and have floats that you'll see decorated in festive ornaments and lights! We hope to see you out there along S. College Ave! Then come back to CPHS later that evening to catch our first home basketball games of the season as we take on Desales High School on the hardwood.
I also want to invite everyone to our Choir and Band Winter Holiday Concerts this upcoming month. Our CPHS Band will be performing on Monday, December 12th at 7:00pm and our CPHS Choir on Wednesday, December 14th at 6:00pm. Both will be playing here in the CPHS commons.
Need a clever gift idea for your teenager this year? Books are back in style! This January we are looking at bringing to College Place High School a Sustained Silent Reading program (SSR) where students across the school will be given 25 minutes to stop and read. Our SSR times will be on Mondays when we do not have a CP Strong SEL lesson on that week. Our goal is to promote literacy and increase students reading books and not screens. Reading has been proven to be a great way for building vocabulary and vocabulary acquisition is so important for our young scholars!
Finally, a reminder that on Friday, December 16th we have a half day early release bell schedule and then we'll be off for Winter Break. School starts in the new year on Tuesday, January 3rd.
In this edition of the Hawks Happening monthly newsletter we give you information about the holiday endeavors and school spirit events at our school, share reminders about our upcoming December 7th Learning Showcase Event, provide information about J Term, and much more.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me at raguilar@cpps.org, or you may call at 509-522-3312.
Happy Holidays and Go Hawks!

CPHS Learning Community Showcase Event!
We invite each of you to come by on Wednesday, December 7th from 4:30-6:00pm to see our hallways and classrooms filled with examples and evidence of student learning! Many of teachers and classes are participating, but some will hold their own events or target the second semester showcase. Ask your student what they are working on in their classes towards this showcase and they should be able to answer you!
A list of all the courses that will be participating in this event is linked here.

J Term 2023
January is around the corner and so is our newly established CPHS tradition of offering a two week J Term reprieve between first and second semester. Students will be earning .5 credit in courses during J Term but will get to explore unique, project rich and hands-on authentic learning, in J Term courses that are driven by teacher passion and student interests.
Our students have been able to register for their top selections and should see their J Term courses in Skyward by the end of the first week in December. Students will be able to come down and speak with a counselor if they wish to change courses and see what else may be available but they must do so before Winter Break.
J Term is also a time where many of our students are given the opportunity to recover a failed course and our Credit Recovery class again will provide a place for students to get support from teachers and paraeducators as they work through our online credit recovery programming.
If you have any questions about J Term please feel free to reach out to teachers directly about specific courses or to us in the main office at 509-522-3312.
Natural Leaders Kick-Off Event! Saturday, January 14 from 1:00-3:00pm
