Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
May 2022
Hello 4-H Families
May: Thriving Youth through Positive Youth Development (PYD)
Youth programs that are intentionally planned and implemented with a rich developmental context enable youth to thrive (Arnold & Gagnon, 2019). From January – April we touched on the developmental context, the “Soil”, of all 4-H programming: Spark, Relationships, Belonging, and Engagement. If we incorporate them, we should see youth thriving; 4-H focuses on seven indicators of thriving youth. From May through November, we’ll discover each indicator. After the introduction, we would love for youth and volunteers to share how they utilized/ participated in an action to help youth prosper.
Indicator 1: Open to Challenge and Discovery
4-H members thrive by being Open to Challenge and Discovery: youth have the desire and ability to explore, try new things, and be challenged.
Strategies:
- Encourage positive risk taking – public speaking/ demonstrations, ropes course/ team challenges
- Opportunities to try new things – share customs, incorporate a new activity, set-aside time for open discussions working on civic dialogue
- Supporting creativity - encourage innovation, curiosity, and self-exploration
- Work on areas of improvement – small group work allows for safe space to share

Gretchen

UPCOMING REGIONAL, STATE & NATIONAL EVENTS
Maryland 4-H Issue Forum
The MD 4-H Issue Forum engages youth ages 14 - 18 from across the state to be deliberate about addressing important issues/community needs. This program is offered every other year on campus at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The goals are to increase awareness and understanding of a community issue and encourage youth to share their new knowledge and be advocates within their own communities. Youth are given tools to develop a greater advocacy for environmental stewardship and civic engagement.
This is a wonderful leadership opportunity; youth will leave with lessons/ activities to bring back and share with their clubs and communities.
2022's theme: Climate Change Details regarding the event and how to register are found here.
International Exchange - Host Families
Invite an international youth into your home for 3 weeks and share an American experience. Expand your family’s cultural understanding, learn about new foods and customs, and possibly a new language all while sharing your own. Your children will build lifelong friendships and will gain new perspectives on their own country too! Host parents reported that, "this experience was life-changing and shifted family priorities in a positive direction."
This summer youth ages 13 - 17 and an adult chaperone from Japan will be coming to the Maryland from July 22 - Aug 15. For more information contact Carrie at cwivell@umd.edu or 240-357-4669.

National Volunteer Week
Helping Hands: Calling All Volunteers
We are compiling a list of volunteers, which we are affectionately calling 'Helping Hands', that may be interested in assisting with judging (record books, contests, variety show entries, fair entries), coaching a team, sponsoring an activity club, assisting with Fair set-up, or establishing partnerships. These are simply options, not required tasks, that we need assistance with - most only require a few hours here and there should we put a call out. Many of these volunteer opportunities can come from the community, UME certification is not required. If interested in being on this list, please email Gretchen at gsumbrum@umd.edu.
Volunteer Refresher Course
The state 4-H program is requiring all UME Volunteers who have been a UME Volunteer for 5 or more years to complete the Maryland 4-H Volunteer Refresher Training, if you have not already done so. It never hurts to get updated on information for volunteering with the Maryland 4-H Program. You can complete the Refresher Course anytime from the comfort of your own home by visiting this link.

HERE'S THE SCOOP
What other resources does my local extension office provide besides 4-H & Youth Development? As mentioned in previous newsletters, every state in the U.S. has a local service called the Cooperative Extension Service. This operation was first formalized by the U.S. government in 1914, instituting an extension service at land-grant universities across the nation. Extension services aim to provide research-backed information to problems you may be facing in the these core areas:
Agriculture/horticulture and Food Systems
Environmental and Natural Resources
Family and Consumer Sciences
4-H Youth Development
Extension is connected directly to universities and extension agents/educators are typically faculty and staff members of your state’s land-grant university system. Every state is a little different in its operations: Some have county offices (like Maryland), some operate on a multi-county basis, and some are more regionally centered. Although each structure is different, the agent/educator’s role is the same. University researchers study topics that are important to industries and also the general public. Agents/educators then take the research data and convert it into usable products and information for the public. They do this by offering free or low-cost workshops, providing services such as field visits and office consultations, and these days, by putting a lot of resources online. Extension also plays a role in the adoption of new techniques and technology in the outlined program areas, ensuring the development of social, economic, and environmental goals. You may be surprised by all the possibilities our local extension office can offer (See article from our Allegany County Extension office in photo)
