Decatur community,
It's Super Bowl Sunday, and my plan is to keep it short and sweet. As kickoff is only moments away, most of you probably won't read this until the game is over, but let's see how good I am at playing Nostradamas.
Chiefs win again!
Mahomes wins MVP!
Kelce scores a touchdown!
Taylor gets a lot of screen time, but so does Travis' brother Jason.
We'll see how close I am.
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to 6th grade student Gemma Louderback. Gemma recently won the Decatur County Spelling Bee. Our runner up was 5th grade student Joshua Minks. Congratulations to both, and they have a few more years to try to repeat themselves. Gemma has qualified for the State Spelling Bee in Salina, KS later this spring.
Shoutout to English teacher Jacinta Carter for her generous cookie treat. As the image of Travis Kelce's brother has been floating around for the past few weeks minus his shirt, the staff was treated to a special, handcrafted cookie with his depiction on it. I admired the staff's attempt to eat around the outside of his body for as long as possible, and I definitely admired Ms. Carter's attempt to remind Mr. Gehring that at least one of the Eagles is going to the Super Bowl.
Shoutout to our JH wrestlers on their performance. Here are our wrestlers that had two or more wins or placed on Thursday at home as well as the wrestlers that placed at Phillipsburg this past weekend:
Home
Gus Bryan - 2nd Place
Kaden Sowers - 2nd Place
Bentley Sutherland - 2nd Place
Trenton Wahlmeier - 2nd Place
Phillipsburg
Grant Anderson - 3rd
Brady Gehring - 4th
Kaden Sowers - 2nd
Mitchell Wasson - 2nd
Shoutout to sophomore Keely Huff and junior Kelsey Sheats. The girls qualified for State Forensics this past weekend. Here are some words from Mrs. Witt:
"We had a good day at Northern Valley today. We had a couple brand new competitors with us today. Cheyanna Hale placed 5th at Impromptu and Keely Huff placed 6th. Cheyanna and Allyson Simpson placed 6th in IDA and Keely Huff and Kelsey Sheats placed 3rd and qualify for state festival. Congratulations kids!!"
Things You Should Know
Sowers Heading Back to State
Last year she made DCHS history as the first female high school wrestler to qualify for State, and that was as a freshman. She has done it again this year, qualifying for the second straight year for the State Tournament in Salina.
It's an a tremendous accomplishment for Sowers, made even sweeter by the fact that mom (Amanda Sowers) is the coach.
Aside from being a great wrestler and a great kid, 2 for 2 going to State is putting her on a track to be one of the more accomplished DCHS wrestlers in history.
Congratulations, Kyra!
Saul's Computer Application Class Gets Great Oberlin Experience
Saul's Computer Applications Class Gets Great Oberlin Experience
This past Wednesday, Ms. Saul's Computer Applications class got a true Oberlin experience. Honestly, there are a whole lot of shoutouts that go along with this day. The students have been working on an Oberlin Visitors' Brochure, and Ms. Saul looked to give her students inspiration. Here are some highlights from their day in a form of shoutouts.
Shoutout to the Decatur County Museum for hosting our students for an hour and a half and for opening especially for them. Ms. Saul saw this as an opportunity to expose and inspire her students.
Shoutout to Gary Anderson, President of the Historical Society who participated in the visit and allowed the students to conduct an interview with him. The students had thoughtfully prepared questions leading up to this portion.
Shoutout to Ruth Meisner, President of the CVB Board. Mrs. Meisner also participated in the field trip and provided insight and support to the students. On top of that, the CVB Board picked up the tab for our student's lunch at the Landmark.
Shoutout to the Landmark for making sure to accommodate lunch for our students. This was a great real life experience.
I will end this section with a quote from Ms. Saul, one that she sent me before the field trip.
"I firmly believe that this field trip will be an enriching experience for the students, allowing them to gather immersive knowledge and insights that will greatly enhance their efforts in recreating the Oberlin Visitors brochure."
Shoutout to Ms. Saul.
Red Devil Ready
Well, it's almost kickoff as this message comes out. There are none of my Broncos in the Super Bowl (again), tons of Chiefs (again), and, as the cookie says, " Thanks to the Chiefs, at least one Eagle is headed to the Super Bowl (again).
We'll have to see just how the cookie crumbles.
Good luck to the Chiefs!
