Cowles Crier
Week of January 16th through January 20th
WE NEED YOUR HELP
As you all know, morning drop off continues to be a problem at Cowles. Our front entrance, driveway, and parking lot have become increasingly difficult to maneuver as our student population has grown. The drop off procedure that we use for car line was developed to keep traffic moving smoothly. And the 15 minute time frame for drop should be adequate for the number of vehicles that need to go through.
However, we still have drivers who stop to let their children off in front of the school instead of the designated drop off point. This slows down the process, which causes a bottle neck and affects not only traffic flow in our parking lot, but also on 63rd, 64th, and College. Last week the traffic to turn on to College from 63rd was backed up all the way north to Franklin because we had a parent parked in front of the school and blocked one whole lane of traffic. In addition, we have received complaints of drivers parking on the lawns of 64th St. homes and we have even had parents make U Turns to avoid having to go around the drop off circle. Needless to say this causes a lot of headaches and many unnecessary tardies for students whose parents were stuck in drop off bottlenecks.
Before school, we have staff placed at Washington, Drop Off, and in the Lobby. We don’t have enough staff to cover the front entrance. THIS IS WHERE WE COULD USE YOUR HELP. Mr. Grylls and Mrs. Lepeltak would like to start a Morning Parent Patrol. We need two parent volunteers to direct traffic at the driveway entrance each day from 8:00—8:30. We would like to start on Monday, January 23, and continue for the rest of the school year. It is crucial that we ease the traffic jam in the morning before school. It helps parents, students, and staff all start their day in a positive way!!
Please contact Mrs. Lepeltak if you would be willing to be one of those VIP Morning Parent Patrol Volunteers. tracy.lepeltak@dmschools.org
