Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Welcome to this snow day edition of the community newsletter. We have had an interesting couple of days watching the sky and wondering what it has in store for us. Despite the distraction, it is important for students to finish the second trimester strong. Remember that any additional snow day will result in an online learning day. We will follow our traditional bell schedule. Students should check their Schoology, Google Classroom, and/or email for a Zoom link from their teachers. See more information below. Please watch for announcements regarding evening and weekend events as well.
Last weekend, the swim team competed in the State tournament. Congratulations to Allison Yancey, Karina Sawatsky, Avery Keinonen and Kali Mull for their second place finish in the 200 medley relay and the team of Yancey, Keinonen, Mull and Junior Amanda Yancey for their third in the 400 freestyle relay. Allison Yancey won another bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke and earned fourth in the 200 meter individual medley. Mull swam to fourth in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events, and Keinonen claimed fifth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 100 butterfly. CHS women’s swimmers placed fifth in the State. On the men’s side, junior Isaac Beck claimed a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle. Junior Kai Laitinen claimed fourth in the 200 medley and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. The men’s team of Beck, Laitinen, Ethan Beck and Andrew Hayhurst finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay, and the men’s team was ninth overall in the state. Congratulations to our amazing swimmers!
CHS hosted the wrestling district tournament last weekend as well. Our grapplers dominated the tournament winning the NWOC League Championships. We had 21 placers, and 18 qualifiers for the OSAA State Championships at Memorial Coliseum. Due to the inclement weather, the tournament has been postponed to Saturday and Sunday. Way to go wrestlers, and good luck at state! See below for more information.
The construction of the new wing continues. This week brought the beautiful wood beams and ceiling of the new commons area and fire retardant installation and other prep work for the new classrooms. We are so grateful for the 2020 bond and all that it will bring to the CHS learning environment.
Stay Warm, and Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
Inclement Weather Info
Remember, if the weather is severe enough to cancel school, the first day of inclement weather will be a snow day for all! Any inclement weather day thereafter will be an online learning day. Elementary school families, this means you will see iPads come home with your students today since questionable weather is forecasted. It’s important that students bring the iPads back to school with them on the next in-person instructional day.
In the event of an online learning day, Canby High School will begin at 8:40 a.m. and all other schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students should watch for Zoom links from their teachers. If students have trouble connecting or need help, they should reach out to their teacher. Canby School District strives to make the most of this valuable educational time, but please know that students will not be penalized if they are unable to connect.
To make sure you’re set to receive information about school delays, or closures, and online learning days, please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert. Now is also a good time to update your text preferences online by listing your phone number.
For more information, please see our inclement weather page.
Dual Language Program Info. Night
Families with incoming kindergarten students, there will be a Dual Language Immersion Information Session located at Trost Elementary School on Monday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. (English) and 6:30 p.m. (Spanish). Please attend to find out more about our Dual Language Immersion program at Trost, which is open to all families in our district and provides students the opportunity to learn in English and Spanish.
Social Media Information
Social media has become a normal part of everyday life and has great potential to be a wonderful communication tool when used wisely. We want to help make sure our students are being safe and respectful online, so please take a moment to read this quick list of tips/reminders about responsible social media use.
Set reasonable limits. Don’t let social media interfere with your activities, sleep, meals or homework. Consider a cut-off time at night.
Be careful what you share. Remember that whatever you put online can potentially be seen by the entire world, so only share what you are comfortable with other people looking at.
Be polite and courteous. Gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation are harmful online just as they are in person.
Talk about social media. Talk about your social media habits and how your use of social media makes you feel. Keep the lines of communication open.
Use it for good. Social media accounts can be an asset when it comes to college and careers. Consider sharing your creative work or posting about a side hustle or job. Use it to find inspiration on a topic you care about.

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
