Faculty Spotlight
Naomi Perez is a 10th grade English teacher here at RC3. She is a proud Troy University and Auburn University at Montgomery alum with degrees in English, Rhetoric/Composition, and Secondary English Language Arts Education. Naomi has been working with students and their writing for almost a decade as a tutor, freshman composition instructor, and classroom teacher. Her passion for classroom teaching stems from her drive to create safe spaces for children to learn and develop their voices as active participants in their community. She believes all students have something of value to share with the world and hopes to give them the tools to do it! In her spare time, Naomi enjoys going on long walks with her Welsh Terrier Olivia, cooking for friends, and singing in the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the Over the Mountain community choir here in Hoover.
RC3 Alumni - Where are they now?
Kevin Tran - Skilled Trades Academy Graduate
Josi Whitlock - Cyber Innovation Academy Graduate
I'm currently attending UAH and rooming with two other RC3 Alumni, Logan and Ton. All three of us are studying for our Bachelor's in Computer Science. I'm also in the UAH Pep Band. Like some RC3 students, I came in with some baseline knowledge in the subject of my academy. RC3 helped to reinforce and build upon that foundational knowledge. My scores in my AP CSA class allowed me to jump ahead in the college course curriculum to a more advanced computer science class. Beyond just the academies, taking dual English 101 with Mrs. Dillard at RC3 also let me jump forward in my curriculum, taking more advanced English courses my first semester. Not only do these speed up my learning, but they also save me money on courses I've already taken. In addition, RC3 gave me opportunities like participating in the SkillsUSA chapter and competing twice in the Computer Programming SkillsUSA State Competition. These opportunities are invaluable in the realm of experience achievable through high schools.
Apart from the educational side of things, RC3 also helped me build relationships (both personal and professional) that have bled into my collegiate career. Both Ton and Logan are friends I met at RC3. We started a large project during our senior year of high school. I also met several academy instructors that I feel I could go to for references and who put in the effort to get to know me, namely Mrs. McClendon, Mr. Naylor, and Mr. Pendleton.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!
Were you aware:
-1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer by age 21
-More than 150 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Alabama
-Over 500 children undergo cancer treatments each year in Alabama
-80% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured of their illness, compared to less than 50% just two decades ago
-Only 4% of federal funding for cancer research is directed towards childhood cancer as a whole
Childhood cancer is a grossly underfunded and overlooked disease, even though it is the leading cause of disease related death in children and adolescents. Give Hope Day on September 28 gives administrators, staff, teachers, parents and children the chance to recognize and honor those who have battled childhood cancer as well as raise awareness. Because awareness leads to funding and funding leads to cures! #givehope
