State Testing
Oregon's Statewide Assessments in science, mathematics, and English language arts will begin on Monday for students in grades 3-8. Scheduled testing will take place during the school day. For additional information on the State Assessments from the Oregon Department of Education, please review the following link.
While no single test can give a complete picture of your child’s progress, statewide tests provide information to students and families, as well as to educators and administrators about what educational approaches are working and where additional resources are needed. Your child’s participation is important to ensure schools and districts receive the targeted resources they need to help all students succeed. Districts are rated on their participation levels as well as student performance on this exam.
Oregon law (ORS 329.479) permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. If you decide to opt your child out of the math and/or ELA state assessments, please submit the following form to your child’s teacher or the front office by April 7, 2023 to best support our school with planning.

In order to increase efficiency during student pick up and drop off, the small parking lot (as shown below marked with an X) will be closed from 7:30 am - 9:00 am, and 2:00 pm - 3:45 pm.
Thank you for your understanding and partnership in making our parking lots as safe and effective as possible!

Emergency Drills (April 24-May 5)
All schools in our District will be participating in emergency drills April 24-May 5. For this third and final round of drills for this school year, we will be practicing the "Lockdown" protocol.
These drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific protocols that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near campus during our lockdown drill, as SPD officers do participate in these drills.
During a Lockdown drill, staff and students are secured within their individual classrooms/offices, and there is no movement in the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.
For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.

Outdoor School - Load Up!
The Monday night prior to Outdoor School is our scheduled time for families to drop off their 6th graders' belongings. Three U-Haul trucks (one for each camp) will be parked out in front of our building, and SMS staff will be present to help load items into the trucks.
Items include: pillows, sleeping bags, and one carry-on sized luggage piece.
All items must be clearly marked with the student’s First and Last Name.
Medications: Any and all required medications will need to be dropped off by a parent or guardian inside the building, Room W1. Medication must be in the original container or prescription packaging, and put in a sealable plastic bag with the Student’s First and Last Name clearly written on the front.
If you are unable to make Monday night work, there will be limited opportunity to drop off student items on Tuesday, May 23rd. An alternative load-up will take place strictly between 8:00am - 8:25 am, at the LDS Church parking lot just west of SMS on Meinecke Rd. Due to the tight turn around for loading items and getting over 300 6th graders on buses, we will not be able to extend the time on Tuesday. Please understand that the preferred time for drop-off is Monday night.
Pick-Up: On Friday, following Outdoor School, parents and guardians will be able to pick up students and their luggage in the back parking lot, by the SMS stadium. If a parent or guardian has clearly communicated their permission to the SMS Office, students will be allowed to walk home and/or ride home with a friend.

Yearbook Update:
We could really use help from parents to submit more photos of 6th graders & 8th graders, as well as Spring Sports/activity photos. Small group photos and selfies are good options.
Also there are many yearbook orders where the flight time teacher is not indicated so if those could be added by parents in their account that will ensure the book gets to their student.
The leadership class is organizing a signing party so it’s important that yearbooks are ordered asap so that they will arrive in time for that.
