COVID-19 cases in Monterey County were decreasing -- and are climbing again

Monterey County was moving in the right direction when it comes to controlling COVID-19 cases -- before going up again. Currently, Monterey County's adjusted case rate is 10/100,000 residents, which places it in the Widespread or Purple Tier, the most restrictive. This measurement must come down to 7/100,000 residents for Monterey County to move to the Red/Substantial Tier. The current positivity rate is 5.8 percent which is the Red Tier. Monterey County must meet the requirements of the next tier for two weeks before the County can open up more sectors.

Lydia Cervantes, Classified Employee of the Year

Lydia Cervantes has worked for the Alisal Union School District for 42 years. She was selected Classified Employee of the Year, and Superintendent Jim Koenig delivered a certificate to Ms. Cervantes at Frank Paul Elementary last week. Ms. Cervantes has worked at Frank Paul for 20 years and is now a resource specialist paraeducator and an after-school teacher.


Ms. Cervantes has held many roles in her history in AUSD, including working in the migrant education department at Sanborn Elementary (now Jesse G. Sánchez) for 15 years. Working for Alisal USD allowed Ms. Cervantes the flexibility to raise her children Angel, Esabel, Agustine and Joseph. To read her entire story, visit the District's website.

Cecilia Moreno Mares, Frank Paul Teacher of the Year

Ms. Cecilia Moreno Mares was selected as Frank Paul Elementary Teacher of the Year because she always goes beyond her teaching duties. She is a compassionate teacher who always leads by example, never complains, and always looks for a positive outcome no matter the situation. She truly cares about her community, colleagues, and most of all students. Her dedication goes beyond the six-hour day in the classroom: she works with migrant students during the summer, and on Saturdays she coaches sports. She is, like they say, a teacher at heart.


Ms. Moreno Mares was recognized by Alisal Superintendent Koenig last week. All Teachers of the Year will be recognized in the upcoming days

Rosa Mejia, Dr. Oscar F. Loya Teacher of the Year

Ms. Mejia is always willing to go beyond the call of duty for student safety and academic achievement. Her charisma contributes positively to Loya's school culture. She is always seeking ways to grow professionally. She is part of the school's Instructional Leadership Team, school-wide committees, and has attended the Chula Vista Learning Walk, where she was able to observe and learn more about Write up a STORM strategies, accountability, data analysis, and much more. Mrs. Mejia has demonstrated commitment to students by spending numerous hours in learning in depth all Common Core Grade Level Standards, curriculum, and students’ needs.


Ms. Mejia was one of the teachers recognized by Mr. Koenig the week of Sept. 28 - Oct. 2.

Blue Zones - get fit and win prizes

For the month of October, Blue Zones Project Monterey County, is partnering with the City of Salinas and Transportation Agency for Monterey County to help create opportunities to safely walk, bike, explore alternative transportation modes, and look at ways to expand existing transportation routes in Monterey County.


Each week is hosted by a partnering agency and will feature free family activities, demos, games and prizes – rules and eligibility vary by activity and agency. Winners will be announced weekly.

Alisal Teachers Break the Internet (and Classified employees have professional development as well)

Oct. 12 will be a day of professional development for teachers and classified employees alike. In keeping with COVID-19 protocols, all meetings will be done online. Teachers will attend the annual Ed Tech Conference, put together by Alisal administrators and the Alisal Teachers Association. Schedule's coming soon! Classified employees will all gather together for the first session, then they'll break up into groups by department. Attendance is mandatory.
