Mama Bear's Unexpected Check In
After my counselor meeting this morning, I went out to my car to get the book for the lesson that I was hoping to do yesterday. My car has been serving as my office during our school closure and helps me keep my work items organized away from the curious eyes and hands my children. This was going to be my "take 4" of that lesson due to my sweet family's life happening while I was trying to record. I was feeling motivated and thought while my kids were still relatively quiet this morning, I would give it another try.
When I got to my car I noticed something looked different. The side of the car was really muddy and my window was down. I slowly realized everything that was in my semi-organized car last night was now all over the inside of my car this morning. It took me a minute, but I realized what happened. A member of the black bear family that lives near us must have wiggled it’s way in through an open window. Mama Bear clearly got into the large tote where I store my school materials. That tote and the back of the Honda were the only boundary I had remaining between work life and home life. The shredded and muddy lid now symbolized my final attempt to separate home and work life during COVID-19 days.
As I looked at the lid of the tote ripped off and shredded into pieces in my car, I realized the bear was thankfully kind to my school books. She did take a moment to use the feeling check in sheet that hung in my office and I used each day with students. I couldn’t help but laugh at a mama bear breaking into my car in search of the faint smell of our unsold Girl Scout cookies and some discarded kid chip crumbs and finding herself checking in with her feelings.
As I cleaned up another mess, this time not made by my children, I took this as my reminder to check in with myself, laugh and take a big mama bear deep breath.

Mama Bear was feeling good.
A reminder to check in with me & not just our families & students.
Pretty sure this solidifies that school and home are now one.
