The Cornell Quaranzine
Supporting Your Well-being - Spring 2021
4/6/2021
Happy April! This month shows us what spring is all about – the season of growth and renewal, the promise of warmer weather, and the desire to spend more time outside, socializing in-person with our friends and communities.
Social connections are key to keeping your stress in check and replenishing your physical, mental, and emotional energy. With more and more people eligible for vaccination (NYS residents 16+ starting today, April 6th), we are one step closer to the end of the pandemic. While people are still in the process of getting vaccinated, it’s important to continue wearing our masks, socializing in small groups only, and adhering to all the same public health guidelines that keep everyone safe. Thanks to all of you who are doing your part!
This edition of the Quaranzine highlights suggestions for how to have fun and connect with others safely!
Wishing you wellness,
The Skorton Center for Health Initiatives

Alcohol Safety Tips for Spring
While you might believe everyone around you drinks alcohol, at Cornell that’s not the case. Many students at Cornell choose not to drink alcohol or use other drugs for a variety of reasons (e.g., in recovery, family history, moral or religious reasons, medication interactions, don’t want to get in trouble, etc.). There are also a lot of reasons why even students who do drink alcohol may choose not to drink alcohol on any given night. This spring, those reasons may include fear of consuming alcohol in social gatherings increasing the risk of COVID transmission.
If you or someone you know is experiencing harm from their alcohol or other drug use, support is available. Tips for lower-risk drinking —including those related to COVID—are provided by Cornell Health to reduce unintended harm and other negative consequences.
All students should know how to recognize the signs of an alcohol emergency and how to get help. Cornell’s Good Samaritan Protocol and New York State’s Good Samaritan Law help protect those who call 911 for help and those who receive help in alcohol-or drug-related emergencies.

Become an Orientation Leader!
Orientation Leaders are highly valued student volunteers who mentor a small group of new first-year or transfer students. OL groups are comprised of students from any of Cornell’s 8 undergraduate colleges. OLs help new students feel at home, at ease, and supported upon their arrival to campus. New students look to their OL for guidance on how to navigate campus life, campus resources, and stories about what it's like to be part of the Cornell community. Being an OL offers the chance to develop transferable skills in leadership, empathy and communication, group facilitation and team building, and running both large and small events.
