Head Cheetahs Message
Families,
Farm Day was a huge success! Thank you to Jen Bove for organizing such an informative, fun-filled event; and thank you to all of the area farmers who shared their time, knowledge, produce, equipment, and animals! We all learned so much. Enjoy the final weekend of October, and get ready to welcome November. It will be a short, but busy month.
Best,
Joey and Andrea
Cheetahs In Action
Farm Day
Much appreciation to all of the volunteers that made this day possible and educated our Cheetahs about all things farming. Students were able to learn and touch a cow, chickens, rabbits and pigs. They were able to learn about the tools a Bee Keeper has to use to make honey and care for the bees. Students planted Zinnia seeds and climbed aboard a tractor. Students learned about healthy foods and taste-tested Callaloo. Farm day was a success!
Pawsitive Office Referral
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others, and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

Art Room Update
October: Art News
During the month of October, we have become inspired by the changing season, and all of its colorful splendor! There is so much beauty and fun in our natural world during this time of year that inspires art in endless ways! Read more to find out what each grade level has been working on and the classroom expectations during art this past month.
Prek: Students finished their sunflower paintings and are beginning to learn about PUMPKINS! We have focused this past month on the appropriate use of a variety of materials, including paint, paint brushes, and even oil pastels. Students learned what happens when you mix paint colors together, like blue and yellow, and yellow and red! We continue to practice taking care of our paintbrushes, too! Don’t forget to DIP, DRIP, WIPE THE TIP!
We then began our next work of art, using wet paint to mix colors and press between layers of paper to make monoprints. These monoprints are one-time copies of something, and the students are creating PUMPKINS with spooky faces, using the monoprinting process! We can’t wait to take them home!
Kindergarten: Students finished their beautiful sunflower paintings and practiced careful care of the primary colors!!! RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE create all of the other beautiful colors of the rainbow, but when you add black or white, you can get even MORE beautiful variations of color! Students practiced keeping their paint cups clean, and their paint brushes with happy hair dos! DIP, DRIP, WIPE THE TIP! That is how we wash our brush in the art room! We are EXPERTS at this now, and our paintings have been sent to “Art to Remember”, the art fundraiser I had mentioned last month. Order forms will be coming home in the next two weeks! Keep an eye out:)
Kindergarten students also started a new project this past week, learning about printing and making something EVEN and EQUAL. We created beautiful PUMPKINS out of one printed/copied, curvy line on our paper. It was AMAZING to see the second half of our pumpkin show up!!! We then used oil pastels to add color, and loved how soft and smooth they are to color with! Lastly, we learned how to cut and curl paper to make our own vines and stems for our beautiful, colorful, symmetrical pumpkins!
1st grade: students finished their still life masterpieces, which they worked SO very hard on.Thank you again to all of the families who helped their child to choose special objects to draw into their art. I brought in a TON of fun objects as well for students to choose from, and everyone really had a blast looking closely and drawing real things. Just wait until you see them! STudents work was sent to “Art to Remember”, the art fundraiser, and order forms with your child's amazing masterpiece will be coming home in the next few weeks:)
Then the first graders began a new art unit, learning all about BONES!!! The students learned how our bones are connected, and even got to put together real x-rays of the whole human skeleton! It was so interesting to see how many bones our body has! We then learned how to draw and “pose” a skeleton in such a way in our artwork, that it looks like our skeletons are in motion/action. This is called creating “Movement” in art, which is one of the 7 principles of design. We got to use Paint Sticks to add beautiful colors and outline our skeletons! To finish this special lesson, we watched a video of skeletons animated in action, called “Spooky, Scary, Skeletons”, some of us even knew dances to go along with that video/song.
2nd grade: students finished their watercolor “under the sea” artwork, and watched how crayons resisted the watercolor paints! Those works of art are being sent to “Art to Remember”, the art fundraiser, so keep an eye out for art order forms, coming in the next few weeks!
Students in second grade then learned all about the Mexican tradition of “Dia De Los Muertos”. This tradition is celebrated across the world now, but originated in Mexico, over 4000 years ago. You will find inspired artwork in movies, on posters, and even in books. Sugar Skulls are infamous for their skull shape and intricate symmetrical designs. So we created our own skull filled with SYMMETRY. We learned how to repeat designs and place them in positions that make both sides of the skull and designs equal, even, and symmetrical. We then used a sharpie, and gel pens to add color and define our symmetrical designs. To finish our beautiful sugar skull designs, we cut and glued our sugar skulls to beautiful and bright colored papers, to further add the feeling of joy and happiness to them. To finish this lesson, we watched a clip from the Disney/Pixar movie, “Coco”. This move takes place during the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico and has so much to see when it comes to beautiful artistry during this annual tradition.
3rd Grade: students have completed their Da Vinci Inspired self portraits, which have been sent to the art fundraiser, “Art to Remember”! Order forms will be sent home in the next few weeks! Keep an eye out for a Parentsquare announcement about them, and the due date!
So now, it is finally that time!!! 3rd Graders are now transitioning into their first CHOICE ART projects! This is a very exciting time, when students take full control of their artistic journey, and determine which projects they will be making. To begin, students needed to show their understanding of what types (subjects) of art could be made. We took an assessment about the different subjects found in art, including: Portrait, Abstract, Still-Life, Landscape, Design, and Animals. Then they had to know and understand what types of art supplies can be used to make these different works of art: Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, Printmaking, Graphic Arts and Photography, and Mixed Media. We traveled through the art room to find the different media organized and labeled on the art room shelves. Once students were able to identify these different types of art and supplies, they planned their first Choice Art project. Many projects are currently underway, and students are creating a wide breadth of artworks, including animal sculptures made of clay, landscape paintings made with watercolors, Abstract drawings made with charcoal or markers,, and so much more! Students will be expected to use a rubric to score their works of art as they progress through the year, with a goal to receive a 3 (Meeting standard) or a 4 (exceeding standard). We will be going over that process next.
ARTIST OF THE MONTH!
These students have shown exemplary craftsmanship, effort, and cheetah pride have been chosen as the artist of the month for September! I am so proud of their hard work and dedication to their art, and kindness and compassion towards others!

Nurse News
Dear Families of Memorial Elementary Students,
We are asking for your assistance in helping keep our school healthy and safe. We have been experiencing an uptick in lots of coughing, strep throat, pink eye and fevers as well as covid cases. Please consider the following guidelines, provided by the school nurse, for sending students to school:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
- Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
- Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
- Mild headache and/or stomachache
- Fatigue
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms and remember the 24 hour rule:
- Fever (greater than 100 degrees. May return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
- Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
- Diarrhea (Must wait 24 hours after last episode to return to school)
- Chills
- General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
- Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
- Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
- redness and discharge from one or both eyes
To help prevent the flu and other colds, please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:
- Wash hands frequently
- Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
- Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. We use our nursing assessment and judgment when students come into the nurse office and make calls home as we deem necessary. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.
*Please also update emergency contact information! In case of an emergency or in instances where your child needs to be dismissed from school, it is extremely important that we be able to reach someone on the contact list. We have also been having trouble with parent voicemail boxes that are full and we are unable to leave a message.
Please also make sure to have a spare change of seasonally appropriate clothing for your child to keep in their cubbies!!
Remember to notify the nurse's office if your child has been diagnosed with any illness (or injury). The nurse tracks illnesses and will send a note home to the class if there are 2 or more cases in the classroom. If your child has an injury that has activity restrictions, please share with the nurse's office so we are aware and can notify appropriate staff members. We want to keep our students healthy and safe and your cooperation is needed to do so. We appreciate your assistance.
Kindly,
The Health Office Team,
Nurse Katie and Miss Michelle

The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office.
