February 1 - 6th and 7th Grade Programming Night & Title I Information Session
Mr. Golderer and Mr. Drago will be on hand to explain the course selection process for students heading into 7th and 8th grade in the 2024-25 school year.
While this meeting does not directly affect elementary school families, you are welcome to attend.
Students do not need to attend as this information will be shared with them at school (if you have childcare issues, of course children are welcome).
In addition, we will have a booth set up for Title I information regarding Log College’s English and Math Programs. Families from all grade levels may attend.
Log College Celebrates MLK Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for all people. Log College celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in various ways.
Students will identify the causes that led to Dr. King’s life work and analyze the effects his words and actions had on society.
Students will read the award winning “Martin’s Big Words”, a brief biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which highlights famous quotes used by Dr. King. Students will bring his words to life by illustrating these quotes
The entire school will be participating in our annual Sock Roll Challenge, which relies on donations from the school community, such as new socks, crackers and granola bars to wrap and present to less fortunate people in the area.
FIRST Lego Robotics Competition
Log College finishing the robot game in 4th place, one place away from moving on to the next championship round (based on overall points). Without having numbers from previous years, I'm pretty sure that they scored the most points any of our teams have scored on the robot game. They had 6 students on their team from Willow Dale's team last year. GREAT job!
Lights, Camera, Action!
Get the popcorn ready! LCMS Grade 7 students in the digital media course, "Lights! Camera! Action!," produced short films depicting traditional "Knock! Knock! jokes. It was quite the challenge because the novice filmmakers had to figure out where to place the cameras and edit the clips to set up the scenes as if the characters were face-to-face through a barrier. A few of the producers included greenscreen effects to enhance the stories. Bravo to our filmmakers as we celebrate their accomplishments. Link to playlist here.
Seventh Grade Science
Last week, students in Mrs. Eckhardt’s and Mrs. Ciliberto's 7th grade science classes concluded their Force and Motion Engineering Unit by competing in the Egg Drop Challenge. Students used what they learned about force, mass, velocity, impact force, and air resistance, and worked in collaborative teams to create a contraption to keep their egg safe when dropped from the ceiling. Teams were given one day to design and one day to build their pod. Although each group was given the same supplies, their designs turned out very different. There is not one “right" design, so students were able to see how different ideas could be successful. On the third day of the challenge, the classes came together to drop their eggs. While not all of the designs were successful in saving their egg, students did an amazing job working together to follow the steps of the design cycle (plan, test, build, analyze). Congratulations to all of the teams that had successful drops. Special shout out to the 7th period classes that had the record with seven successful drops!
WIDA Testing
Beginning on January 17, 2024, the Centennial School District will begin the annual WIDA ACCESS (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State) testing window for our English Learners (ELs). The WIDA ACCESS is a PDE mandated and federally reported assessment of English Language Proficiency (ELP). The families of our English learners should have received an email communication for our Coordinator of Teaching and Learning: English Language Development and Inclusive Practices, Althea Tomlinson.
Our school testing dates are:
The WIDA ACCESS assessment is an important tool that guides the individualized instruction of our English learners. If you have any questions about the assessment, you can reach out directly to your child’s English Language Development (ELD) teacher.
Here are some things you can do to help your child prepare for the WIDA ACCESS:
Be sure your child/children are receiving and adequate amount of sleep during the testing dates
Be sure your child/children eat breakfast each morning before testing
Be sure your child/children bring their school issued electronic device to school every day fully charged
Encourage your child do do their very best on the assessment
December Students of the Month
Congratulations go out to Brian N., Alyssa R.-U., Rowan W., Stella M., Jonah C., Elina G., Ethan C., Ani M., Jeremiah L., Megan P., Brianna V., and Everett P., who were selected by their teachers as December’s Students of the Month! Way to go everyone, and keep up the great work!
FCS Class (Baking)
7th Graders have been making sugar cookie dough. They learned how to make meringue cookies with leftover egg whites from the sugar cookie recipe. (We try not to waste ingredients).
Winter Sports
Boys Basketball Tryouts conclude this week.
***Wrestling Log vs. Klinger will be January 31 at 6:00 p.m. at Log***
Dear Log College Families,
Winter Sports season is quickly approaching here at Log College. The Winter sports season runs from November through February and features four sports open to our 7th and 8th-grade students. Log College will be offering Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Wrestling, and Cheerleading. We are pleased to announce that, for the first time (if enough students try out), we will have Junior Varsity (JV) teams for both boys and girls basketball, providing more students with the opportunity to participate in winter sports. It's important to note that these are not exclusively 7th or 8th-grade teams but are composed of a mix of both grades.
If your child is planning to participate in any of these sports, he/she must have a physical. No student may play or practice until a physical has been received.
PIAA sports physical -
All students must have a completed PIAA physical (dated after June 1, 2023). The physical forms can be downloaded from the link - PIAA Physical Form - Updated 3/22/23 (or you can pick one up from Mr. Corey, our athletic director or any LCMS coaches).
If you have already played a sport in the Fall, you do not need to complete a new physical, but you must re-submit section 7 (Re-certification by parent/guardian) from the PIAA physical form. This page does not require seeing a doctor or medical provider.
If you did not submit a PIAA physical in the Fall, you must complete Sections 1 to 5 within the PIAA sports physical packet. This must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Section 6 must be completed by an authorized medical examiner (family doctor, urgent care, minute clinic). You can ignore pages 7-8.
If you cannot find an appointment time with your doctor, you may use another provider or visit a CVS Minute Clinic or visit an Urgent Care center. The Centennial School District has a partnership with Liberty Urgent Care:
If you use any of the following Liberty Urgent Care centers and mention Centennial SD, your physical will only cost $20. (Locations listed below)
