Happy Spring to our MMS Community!

We are excited to be back from our April break and heading into the final months of the school year. It is hard to believe how quickly it has gone by! May brings a lot of important testing dates to wrap up the 2022-23 school year and to begin prepare for the 2023-24 school year. This is the time of year that we capture snapshots of the progress made and collect data for future planning. You will see dates for the State MEA tests listed in our important dates below. In addition to this, our local NWEA assessments will be administered on teams sometime in May to benchmark our reading and math progress throughout this school year. Our 8th grade students (only) will also be taking the MEA for Science, which is a state assessment, at some point between May 15-25th.

Transition planning is underway this upcoming month. Our 8th grade students have completed the course selection process with their 8th grade teachers and counselors, working closely with MHS student services, to prepare for a smooth transition to MHS. Likewise, we have started planning for when we will meet and welcome the rising 6th graders into the MMS community.

Be on the lookout for MMS student performances coming up as well in the month of May. There will be a band concert, a choral concert, and also a spring musical!

On March 23, 2023 Massabesic Middle School sent the top six schoolwide KidWind teams to Ocean’s Gateway in Portland to compete in the State KidWind Challenge against schools from around the state. The students tested their wind turbines in a wind tunnel and were judged on their turbine’s power output (best out of 3 trials), their design and documentation, as well as their presentation to the judges. All six of our teams fared well, taking home 3 of the top 10 spots and 2 of the top 3 spots! The MMS team, NCL Wind Turbines, had the highest power output of all turbines at the competition and they placed second overall, securing them an invitation to the 2023 National KidWind Challenge to be held May 14-17 in Boulder, CO.

On the evening of March 30th two MMS teachers, Ruth Miller and Molly Olsen, lead the triumphant return of Literacy Night! As part of Literacy Night parents and students each read a shared book, in this case, Garlic and the Vampire—a popular graphic novel which looks at bravery and anxiety through the eyes of some very charming fantasy characters. During the meeting the groups discussed the book and its themes, compared different kinds of books to graphic novels, and used important inference skills to fill in the thoughts of various characters at different times in the book. The evening was a lot of fun, and the support of families regarding their child's reading journey is appreciated!

After studying the Boston Tea Party in social studies, our 7th graders on Team Allagash were treated to a "Tea Party" in Ms. Jewett's class!

Attention all 6th grade Parents/Guardians:

All students entering grade 7 for the 2023/2024 school year are required to provide the school with proof of the following state required vaccines:

• 1 dose of Tdap (booster)

• 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine

Proof of vaccination or exemption for those who qualify must be on file with the School Nurse before August 30, 2023 (the first student school day). Vaccination records can be dropped off at school, faxed to the School Nurse at 207-247-8621, or scanned and emailed to jenniferdorr@rsu57.org.
