Flu Season Information

Flu Season

Preventive measures are by far the best way to minimize the spread of the flu. Our district nurses would like to share these helpful flu prevention tips: English Español

School Start Times

At the December School Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved a change in start times for secondary schools, which will take effect in the fall of 2020. Starting in the 2020-21 school year, school schedules will be as follows:

Elementary -- 7:55am-2:15pm

Middle/High -- 8:30am-3:20pm

This change was made after the District researched best practices for improving student mental health, attendance, and achievement. Input was gathered from students, parents and staff through a survey in September and a Community Forum in November. Feedback gathered through that survey was shared with the Board of Directors in conjunction with the District's final recommendation.

Student Health Screenings

HEART SCREENING OPPORTUNITY (for children age 12 or older):

There will be a free walk-in (no appointment necessary) PlaySmart Heart Screening at the Sherwood Providence Medical Group (16770 SW Edy Rd.) on Tuesday, February 18th from 3:30 – 7:00pm for children ages 12-18. This screening is conducted by the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute. The child’s height, weight, and blood pressure will be checked and they will receive an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) at no charge. This ECG/EKG is then evaluated by a Providence Cardiologist and results are sent to you.

For more information about the February 18th opportunity, please contact the Providence PlaySmart office at 503-216-6800. If that date is inconvenient for you, please contact the PlaySmart office to find out other options.

Sherwood School District offers PlaySmart Heart Screenings several times a year at the high school level. For more information about the screenings at Sherwood High School, please contact our District Nurses Lisa Church, RN at 503-825-5456 or Jerilyn Wernet, RN at 503-825-5488.

FREE VISION SCREENING FOR ALL ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
We will be giving a free vision screening to all elementary students during the month of January (see dates by school below). The testing will be done by Lions Club, with the help of parent volunteers, using the SPOT screening devices. The screening is painless and is done from a distance and does not touch your child’s eyes or face.

Results come to us in about a week. Most children pass the exam. Due to the volume of paperwork we will only send home “not passing” results to parents/guardians in student backpack mail. If you want a copy of “passing” results please contact your school. Screening results for all students will go in their school file.
If you do not want your child to have the vision screening (opt-out) please contact your school office.

If you have any questions about the vision screening please call Health Services at 503-825-5485. Financial assistance may be available if you need an eye exam and/or glasses for your child.

Our District Nurses will be giving a free screening for scoliosis/posture (scoliosis is often called “curvature of the spine”) to all fifth grade students during the month of January (see dates by school below). This screening will check for irregularities in posture. This is a painless screening of your student’s spine and is done over their clothing. We will send results home to you by backpack mail and a copy of the results will go in the student file. If you do not want your child to have the scoliosis/posture screening (opt-out) please contact your school office.
