APS Family SEL Newsletter
June 16, 2021
Dear APS Families,
We have finally come to the end of what has been a very different year for all of us. I have personally been incredibly impressed with all of the students I have spoken with this year and how they have handled themselves in a year full of change and many ups and downs. In this newsletter I will be sharing some information with you about SEL in the district and what we will be focusing on for the 21-22 school year as well as resources that may be helpful to refer to during the summer. One of these resources is my SEL website, which I update frequently throughout the school year and summer. I hope you all find some time to relax and renew. Please do not hesitate to contact me during the summer, email is best as I will be in and out of the office.
Take Care,
Jen
Director of Counseling & Social-Emotional Learning

Measuring Student Voice in SEL
This spring, students in grades 6-11 were administered the Developmental Relationships Survey from Search Institute. This survey includes the 3 Core Measures of Developmental Relationships, Social and Emotional Competencies, and Equitable Practices. Developmental relationships are close connections through which young people discover who they are (identity), gain abilities to share their own lives (agency), and learn how to interact with and contribute to the world around them (committed to their community). Search Institute’s research has shown that when young people experience developmental relationships with caring adults, they tend to report a wide range of positive outcomes including social-emotional strengths, increased resiliency, and greater academic motivation. The results from this survey will allow us to examine how Ashland students view their relationships with their teachers, their own social-emotional competence, and how equitable they feel their school environment is. We will celebrate the areas of strength and put interventions in place to strengthen areas of opportunity by adopting the developmental relationships framework. To learn more about Search Institute and the developmental relationships framework, please click here. Stay tuned for more information in the fall!
