A Note from the School Nurse
Is my child too sick for school?
COLDS and COUGHS - If symptoms are mild, such as a stuffy nose and occasional sneezing and coughing, and the child does not have a fever, he/she may attend school. If your child is up at night, has a fever, is tired and headachy, or is coughing and sneezing incessantly⦠he/she should stay home to rest and get extra fluids. A Covid-19 test should be done to rule out this infection.
FEVER - This requires extra rest and fluids, and a student is not eligible to attend school even with fever reducing medications. They are very contagious to others. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that every home have a device to check temperatures. If the child has a temperature over 100 degrees, do not give medicine and then send the child to school, please. Students should be fever- free for 24 hours WITHOUT fever- reducing medications. Please be mindful that body temperature tends to rise throughout the day.
STREP THROAT- Students may return to school 24 hours after initiating their antibiotics, and are fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications. They need to feel well enough to participate in the school programming. The pediatrician should provide a return to school note.
DIARRHEA- If a student has 2 or more loose stools in a 24 hour period, they should remain home. There should be no diarrhea for 24 hours. They should be back to eating and drinking normally before returning to school. Diarrheal illnesses are generally very contagious in elementary school settings.
VOMITING - If a student has vomited in the past 24 hours, they should not attend school. He/she should be back to eating and drinking normally, be fever-free without medication for 24 hours, and have the energy to participate in school day activities.
HEAD LICE - While head lice are very annoying, they do not cause illness. The Department of Public Health does not want children to miss school because of head lice. It is recommended that parents do a repeat lice shampoo treatment in seven to nine days. Active nit combing should be done in the interim. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics provide guidelines for specific treatments.
EAR INFECTION -The child may attend school when fever-free for 24 hours and is well enough to participate in the school day activities.
RED EYES - Please consult your pediatrician if your child wakes up with red, sticky, crusty eyes. Many things cause these symptoms, but often it is an infection. If the cause is viral or bacterial, the learnerβs symptoms should be improving before resumming school attendance.
