Principal's Note
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am honored to have the opportunity to be selected as the permanent Principal for IAA. This is a magical community that is filled with love and support for one another. I recognize that I have to continue learning and understanding what it means to be an Integrated Arts school. I will be taking some classes through Focus 5 and the Kennedy Arts Center this spring and over the summer. I will continue to meet with our Integrated Arts Coach to help create meaningful programming for our students and families.
On March 17th our Kindergarten and First Grade classes had an opportunity to bring their parents to their classroom. This was the first time that many family members were able to come into our building since enrolling their child at IAA. We hope to have more of these small events as the spring progresses. We are also working on some large community events that allow all families to tour our building and see the amazing work our students have been doing this year.
I will continue to send out my bi-weekly newsletter to families along with this monthly update. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at mscheidt@bsdvt.org

Come back to school to enjoy some fun
MAKE AND TAKE MATH PROJECTS/GAMES/ART!
More details to follow.
On March 7th and 8th we had some special guests at IAA… the Drum Daddies! The Drum Daddies is made up of Speech (Arrested Development), Manas Itene (Michael Franti and Spearhead), and local social justice activist James Ehlers. Every student was provided the opportunity to drum alongside these international rockstars and the joy and music was infectious. Please check out the upcoming March Town Meeting for some pictures, music, and fun from the two-day residency.
The 2021-22 IAA t-shirts are in the works! Design unveiling to come in late-April. Each and every student currently attending IAA will receive a shirt this June. Please stay tuned for more information about ordering one for yourself or an IAA fan and also the ways that you can contribute to the t-shirt fund to keep this tradition alive. With rising costs and stress on distribution systems, the cost of this project will rise this year so it is more important than ever that we all work together.
Arts Integration
Kindergarten students are working on mastering some pretty tricky concepts in math and art. They are learning all about number pairs that make 10 and the ways in which they can be represented. They are writing equations, writing number stories, and drawing illustrations using ocean animals. Students are also making connections during their literacy block as they read and write about ocean animals.
1st grade is investigating light and sound in science and art, asking questions such as, “What happens when light hits an object?” They just completed light collages inspired by the work of Henri Matisse. Students used translucent, reflective, and opaque papers in their art as well as glue that dried to be transparent. Next, students are performing experiments to learn about the ways that sound interacts with its environment as they work toward observing their environment to create a sound map.
2nd grade is traveling around the world studying geography and investigating artmaking. They are working toward using their new understanding to create accurate models of the globe.
3rd grade is integrating writing and drama as they write and express their opinions. They are learning various strategies for expressing their opinions respectfully and with balanced emotions, while also, researching to support their opinion with facts. They are also practicing taking different perspectives as they express arguments that are different from their own opinion!
4th grade is engaging in some ambitious and important learning over the course of the next 6 weeks. They are investigating sources of energy, human activity, and climate change in order to create a public service announcement.
5th graders are asking questions like, What is a fraction? What is an equivalent fraction? What is a beat? and What is a rhythm? for the final Integrated Arts unit of the year. They will be using their understanding of fractions to create rhythms and compositions that they will perform in trios. They will be asked to collaborate and showcase their math, writing, music, and performance skills!Town Meeting
February’s Town Meeting was postponed due to a snow day until March 4, 2022. If you have not had a chance to check out all of the amazing writing and rapping that IAA has been doing as a result of working with Baba Bomani, please watch here. Bomani was amazed at how much our students have grown this year and truly embraced writing!
March’s Town Meeting will be shared on Friday, March 25th. It will celebrate the March students of the week, the IAA Sticky Note Project, Magic Mailbox, the ONE-Strings Olympics, the Drum Daddies, the Integrated Arts breakfasts, and IAA Celebrating Black Voices!
ONE Strings!
The last class of 4th/5th grade ONE Strings was on Tuesday, March 15th. 4th and 5th graders participated in the ONE Strings Olympics. The Olympics were made up of 4-6 “events” where the kids show proficiency and progress, not perfection. An example of an event is Rest Position Steps or Play a portion of your favorite ONE Strings song or Name 3 parts of the instrument. Students picked 3 events to try. They each received a medal for participating in the 3 events.
ONE Sings!
Mr. Brian is back at IAA for the second session of ONE Sings. It has been so wonderful to see students reconnecting with Mr. Brian, singing their favorite songs, and learning new ones. Students have learned so much about music this year! ONE Sings will wrap up for the school year the week leading up to April break.
Drama
In drama we have been Celebrating Black Voices. In grades 1-5 we learned how to read portraits as biographies. We looked for the sitter's facial expressions, focal point, gestures, clothing, setting, and objects to learn about a person’s life. Students then chose an influential Black leader to learn more about. They had 3 different options to share about their Black leader. 1) write a rap, 2) select 3 words that embodied their leader and add gestures, 3)learn a quote from their leader and add gestures. In kindergarten we’ve been learning about using our bodies safely through the exploration of ocean animals.
Here’s to spring!

Music
The music room has been so fortunate to have hosted Kelly Becker-Mancini in January, and most recently The Drum Daddies: Manas Itene (Michael Franti & Spearhead) and Speech (Arrested Development). Vermont’s own Michael Ehlers was able to get these two rock stars together and come to the IAA the first week of March. They taught drumming to all classes and also spoke of social justice in music.
