SLI Families:

Lots of people to thank, praise, and acknowledge in this edition of our newsletter.

Thank you to our staff and families for engaging in conversations of how your student is doing this year thus far at Silver Lake. Feel free to reach out to teachers at any time throughout the school year with questions or concerns. Since report cards are not until the end of first semester this school year, please do circle back with our teachers if there is follow up discussion or check-ins needed as a result of your fall conference.

Thank you to the PTO and families who donated money, food, and beverages for the meals provided for our staff during conference nights and helped with set up and take down. Last week we had our wonderful Sendik's sandwich meal and funds collected contributed to our pizza this week.

Thank you to Gina Anderson, our PTO Book Fair Coordinator, and all the wonderful volunteers for a successful book fair! We appreciated the help from NJHS student volunteers in setting it up and taking it down.

Thank you to our families who send us such great young human beings to us. We do our best to grow and nurture them each and every day.

Please see the information regarding our seventh grade students participating in a voluntary student wellness survey.

SOAR is a 30 minute block of time during our school day. SOAR stands for Student Opportunities for Achieving Results. During SOAR students may be silent reading (practicing their literacy skills) or completing problems/lessons on a digital math platform such as IXL or Dreambox. Students may be learning about current events or applying their literacy skills by reading and responding to science/social studies content articles.

Additionally, students may be involved in small strategy group work. Some strategy group work is more formalized in intervention programming. Other strategy groups are focused on extending strengths (enrichment) or flexible to provide more small group instruction on grade level skills that may need additional instruction and practice. If your child is receiving formalized intervention programming, you will receive communication outlining the focus of that programming. Other groups are designed to be flexible and focused on a specific skill or goal. While SLI has been providing interventions and targeted groups in the past, this school year our goal is to provide even more students opportunities to improve their academic achievement.

Stay tuned for more details about our SLI PTO Un-Fundraiser for this school year. We are aiming for a $15,000 goal to continue supporting our building technology needs. We have already had some donations! Here is the link:

During our study of Ancient Mesopotamia, students learned about how different civilizations began and developed through a simulation called "Empires". Students were a part of a particular tribe (Babylonians, Hittities, Phoenicians, Medes or Persians) and were able to gain wealth for their civilization by forming armies to conquer lands and acquire resources. It was an engaging way to learn about this part of history. These pictures are from the Ziggurat Challenge to create the tallest temple.

5th grade students celebrated the October Number Corner Activity of measuring the mass of carrots over time with a 5th grade wide “Carrot” theme day in math referencing the book “Creepy Carrots.”

Emelia M. gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Mrs. Schilz who in turn gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Haylee F. Although I teach MANY awesome students, Haylee stands out in so very many ways! She gives her all each and every day, being SUPER-conscientious with her homework, and making sure that she really understands concepts. In addition to being an exceptionally responsible student, Haylee goes out of her way to be kind to every single person, period. She is a helper, she is an advocate for others -- in short, she is a kind and generous human being who is the perfect example of what the Chain of Awesomeness is all about.

Greyson C. gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Mrs. Findlay who in turn gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Helena G. Helena is the type of person you always want on your team! She's encouraging, kind, considerate, loyal, honest, hardworking, I can't say enough about this young lady! If there ever was an academy award in Hollywood for the Chain of Awesomeness, Helena would WITHOUT A DOUBT win! She is fabulous!

Haylee F. gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Mrs. Effinger who in turn gives the Chain of Awesomeness to Jaden H. Jaden's positive attitude shines in the classroom. He always makes sure to include everyone in activities and makes sure all feel welcome in the 7th grade community. He applies himself in the classroom and always strives to do his best. Jaden is a great role model for his peers in 7th grade.

Parents of students 16 and younger seeking a work permit, will now log on to the Department of Workforce Developments page and use their permit application tool. Here is the link: Work Permit.

This new system will allow you to apply for a permit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer, tablet or smartphone. You will make your payment through the system as well. The department will mail a paper copy of the permit directly to your child's employer.

As a short-term sub, you have the flexibility to choose which school you would like to work at, and what schedule works best for you. Use this online form for a fast and easy application process if you’re interested in joining the OASD as a short-term substitute.

Long-term substitute teacher, paraprofessional, and custodian positions are also available at all of our OASD schools. You can apply online through WECAN for a long-term position by creating an account, then searching for Oconomowoc Area School District in the support staff section.
