On the JSE news and in our classrooms this week we celebrate MLK Day through books, articles, and short videos. His lessons are excellent examples of our monthly characteristic traits. At JSE our character traits for January are Demonstrate Perseverance and Forgiveness.

As a school learning goal we continue to focus on having a growth mindset when using our mathematical problem solving skills to persevere through math word problems. Your child's class will be examining problem solving steps, applying their skills and tracking their class progress in our hallway. Thank you nightly for your effort and time, working together with your child to solve those rigorous word problems in their homework can be challenging for us parents too! Over winter break, promethean boards were added to each classroom. Students utilize the upgraded technology resource during daily interactive lessons. We are thankful for UTSC's commitment to blended learning and computer science standards.

Our 2nd graders thank the Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction Team for their Water Watchers Program! Students learned through hands-on experiments and presenting their findings to their peers. Learning experiences and opportunities grow our brains. We appreciate their partnership!

• PTO Meetings usually occur the first Tuesday of each month at 6PM. Please consider attending the meetings this year, every JSE parent is welcome and encouraged to attend!

**Masks are optional during the school day and required on the bus.

Recess: Students go out for recess at 10 degrees and above. Please make sure to send a winter coat, gloves, and hat for recess each day. In addition, your child will not be allowed to play in the snow without snow pants and snow boots. Please remember to label your child's clothing items.

Delays and School Closures: You will receive an email and text from UTSC indicating a school delay or closure plan. Make sure we have updated contact information in our system. You may also check our website in the morning for a school closure announcement as well as follow the UTSC twitter account.
