Keep Esperanza Alive!
This collaborative activity was inspired by the character: Esperanza Raising, a wealthy girl who lived in Mexico. After her father's death, Esperanza had to deal with her relatives and the struggles derived from living a life she was not accustomed to and to count on her grandma "abuelita" as her only family resource for her present and past memories. This is the story of many of our multilingual learners and Keeping Esperanza Alive was a way to motivate our academic leaders to keep our hope (Esperanza)alive throughout the school year. 2020 WIDA ELD standards Kickoff Fiesta & A Fabulous Keynote Speaker
Dr. MariaRosa Rangel serves as the Director for Family and Community Engagement in the Office of Equity Affairs for the Wake County Public Schools District (WCPSS). Dr. Rangel is active and well respected within the Latino community. She serves as the Board Chair of Director for the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals, Chair for the NC Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, and she is Member for the Consulate General of Mexico Local IME Scholarship Committee. She was recognized as the Latino Leader for the Week by WARL-HOLA-NC-Fox 50. In October 2013, she was honored with the Latino Diamante Award in the education category. Her biggest recognition was issued on September 7, 2018, when she was awarded the Ohtli Award by the Consul General of Mexico Remedios Gomez Arnu for her longstanding contribution to the NC Latino families. In July 2022, Dr. Rangel received the LIFT Innovator Award for Equity and Inclusion and during the month of October 2022, she was highlighted during the Hispanic Heritage Month on ABC 11 for her outstanding work with NC families.
Faces of Collaboration
The Multilingual Learner Program of PSRC in partnership with its neighboring counties of Bladen, Sampson, and Beaufort and the Office of Equity Affairs introduced the big ideas of the 2020 WIDA ELD standards as part of the district rollout. In accordance with our district leverage model, our academic leaders familiarized themselves with the resources offered by title III NCDPI that included presentations and interactive resources to build a comprehensive experience with the language standards.
Let's remember that we all are teachers of language, and we are all teachers of reading in core areas. We hope that this effort aids the district stakeholders to develop ownership of the standards to promote equitable services to our learners as a shared goal in and outside the district. One Team, One Goal! Thanks to all participants. It was an amazing collaborative learning experience.
