Tohickon Valley Elementary School
Connect Ed Message sent 1/10/17 -
Good afternoon,
This is Dr. Bradley. I am reaching out to inform you that the fire alarms went off at 2:53 this afternoon at TV unexpectedly. The building was immediately evacuated and fire personnel came to the building. We learned that there was a frozen pipe in the basement that caused the alarms to go off due to the sprinkler water flow activity. All students are safe and are back in the warm building. All of the students and staff are to be commended for their excellent implementation of emergency procedures in very inclement weather. Thank you!

NEW NEWS...
Many Thanks to our AWESOME PTO for Holiday Parties before the Break - The students were so excited before the break and with good reason. In every classroom, the PTO Volunteers had coordinated creative, fun activities for the students. The smiles and laughter were contagious. Thank you to all of the volunteers for their time and commitment to our students!
Thanks to PTO and Volunteers who assisted the students in shopping and wrapping their gifts in the Holiday Shop! We hope everyone's efforts made for a bright holiday for gift givers and recipients!
Update on New Secretary at TV - We are still in the process of finalizing the hire of a new building secretary. Mrs. Ely, a staff member at TV, will continue to manage the office during this transition. Dr. Bradley will update you with the new secretary information as soon as it is available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Thank you to the TVES Music Department and Mr. Kennedy for a fun holiday send off with the Holiday Sing-Along, Santa Band, and the 2nd Grade Musical!

From the Desk of Principal Bradley:
The TVES Faculty, Staff and I would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We are hopeful that you have enjoyed your time thus far with your family and friends and are looking forward to the extra day off on Monday, January 2nd!
It's hard to believe that we are about to enter 2017! I'm excited about what's to come because I am confident that this will be a year of opportunities for all of us! We plan to capitalize on the opportunity to continue partnering with you for student achievement and success! Expect to hear ways that you can help do so from your child's teachers. Also, another great resource is the QCSD website, where you can find helpful information such as End of Year Competencies right at your fingertips.
As we begin the new year, plans are underway to discuss the future replacement of Tohickon Valley and Milford Middle School. Dr. Harner recently invited us to a Facilities Committee Meeting on January 12th at 5:30 in the District Services Center Board Room to discuss the development of the 126 acres that QCSD owns behind Target and BJs. Please join us for the one-hour meeting on January 12th.
Also, as you prepare for winter and make plans for warmer times, I want to remind you of the PSSA testing window for your planning purposes:
PSSA Testing Window
English Language Arts - April 3 - 7, 2017 (Grades 3-5)
Math - April 24 - 28, 2017 (Grades 3-5)
Science - May 1- 5, 2017 (Grade 4)
Please keep in mind that the district will not approve any family trips for students in grades 3-5 during the assessment periods due to the nature of the tests. Please contact Dr. Bradley directly if you have questions or concerns.
Mid-marking period for this trimester is approximately January 20th (given the extra day off of school on Monday, January 2nd). As you begin making resolutions for the new year, it's the perfect time to resolve to continue your partnership for literacy at home by having students read at least 20 minutes a day. This article explains how your child benefits from those 20 minutes of reading each day and this article explains How Parents Can Nourish a Child's Literacy at Home. Enjoy!
Expect great things in 2017! Thank you for partnering with us and Working Together to Be Our Best!
Your partner in education,
Dr. Orathia Bradley
PARENT RESOURCES
Prior to break, many students experienced illnesses such as stomach viruses. These students have been having the following symptoms with and without a fever:
- abdominal pain/discomfort
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
Many of these students are starting with a day of discomfort and lack of appetite prior to vomiting or diarrhea occurring.
We also had students with strep throat.
As both of these illnesses are contagious, we ask that you keep your child home if there is any question that they are not feeling themselves. We have had a few parents tell us that their child did not want to miss a test or special event; although students may be sad at missing an event or worry about falling behind, they are often too sick to participate and risk infecting their fellow students and staff members.
Also, please remind your child to wash their hands frequently to avoid the risk of germs. Although hand sanitizer is okay in a pinch, it is not effective in preventing the spread of viruses.

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy New Year!
