Ms Jonga has nominated 8B2 who have made great progress in solving equations. Danissa , Emmanuel and Alex were quite brilliant. Also nominated are 7P who are a pleasure to teach and always keen to learn. They did well on reading and plotting coordinates from the grid. They loved creating geometric figures by plotting the coordinates. Julia J ,Lily A and Phoebe D in particular are meticulous and hardworking, and Year 9 students Maisey, Olivia and Hannah have put in an outstanding effort in solving equations and have worked diligently.
Ms Wawryniuk has nominated 11A1 for great results and massive improvement in their recent assessments, particularly Zhivko, Ollie, Maya, Mariyah, Thomas, Kacper, Ronnie, Isabella and Lucy. Well done! Keep it up! 9B1 have demonstrated resilience and consistency in solving quadratic equations and achieve great results, especially Rhys, Harley, Nikola, Sophie, Jefe, Marley and Natalia.
Year 7 students Kaleb, Charlie, Francesca, Dexter, Hollie, Marika and Kim have completed fabulous work and effort.
Ms Cupid has nominated 7Q, and 8A1 who are hardworking, settled and participate in the Maths lessons. Students in 8B3 have made great progress.
Mrs Wynn has nominated 8A3 who are so committed to their studies at present and this has shown in their recent find the gap assessments. Jack C and Ashton H are very focused. Leyton, Andrei, Callie, Oliwia, Melande and Isla consistently complete all set tasks to a high standard. Nikola, Charlotte, Kaylah and Cornelia do not give up when challenged and will persevere with tasks. 9A3 have allowed themselves to take on some challenging topics. Special mentions to Guilia, Violeta, Daisy and Kuzi who are consistently focused every lesson and produce excellent work. Kai and Connor have noticeably been putting in extra effort and completing some impressive work. 10A2 and 10C2 are putting in maximum effort, which is being reflected in them making excellent progress. Both classes have grasped the importance of each task within the topics, challenging goal free and exam questions have been taken head on. 11A2 are nearly at a stage where the scheme of work content has been completed. This will now lead to an exciting time of closing gaps in key knowledge and lots of hard work to achieve their target grades and beyond. This will be achieved by also attending Maths interventions and self-revision. Students who have already gained a grade from last year include Cole, Shane, Ryan, Benjamin, Harry, Dominika, Dominic, Dylan, Jake, Paula, Julia and Oliver. Well done everyone!
Curriculum Focus:
Year 12:
Physics:
This term, year 12 physics students have been studying materials which includes classification, analysing force-extension and stress strain graphs and determining the Young modulus of a wire in an experiment which requires the length of an entire lab to complete!
Chemistry:
Year 12 are currently looking at alkenes and E/Z isomerism as well as the reactivity of these compounds.
Biology:
Year 12 Biologists have been looking at cells and microscopes, and have starting looking at cell membranes, the structure of the membrane and the different ways we can transport materials across biological membranes
Applied Science:
Year 12 are currently studying Isomers in chemistry and how they change the interaction of the molecules with the surroundings. In the Biology section, they have been studying tissues including connective tissue, muscle tissue and Gonads.
Questions (A Level):
- How do you conduct an experiment to determine the breaking stress of a steel wire
- How could you work out the concentration of sugar in a carrot
- How many isomers for C4H8 can you draw?
Questions (Applied):
- What is a chiral carbon? Draw a structure of a chiral molecule
- What are features of a nerve cell and nervous tissue?
- How would the number of isomers be calculated in a chiral molecule?
Year 13:
Physics:
Year 13 have been studying and carrying out experiments on capacitors. They have also recently studies astrophysics which, whilst interesting in its own right, has led to many debates going beyond the curriculum on ideas such as the fate of the universe and our own existence.
Chemistry:
Year 13 are approaching the end of organic chemistry and have been focusing on spectroscopic techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR. We have been looking at how we can determine the structure of an unknown compound from the analysis of spectra.
Q: How many proton environments are in phenol?
Biology:
Biologists have been looking at genetics and evolution. We have looked at how selection pressure give rise to evolution of new species and looking at genetics and whys in which people can change the genomes of a species as well as discussing the ethics behind the science.
Applied Science:
Year 13 have just completed a unit 2 assessment. This included various analytical methods used in chemistry and biology, including Chromatography, electron microscopes and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. They are now focusing on the unit 6 course work based on health and safety in the workplace as well as the laws surrounding it.
Questions (A Level):
- Suggest why some cosmologists believe that the big freeze is a likely fate of the universe
- What are the ethical considerations of genetic engineering?
- How many proton environments are in phenol?
Questions (Applied)
1. How does FAAS work? Why does it not do multi-element analysis
2. What is the lytic and lysogenic cycles? What is the main differences?
Year 10 Design and Technology:
This week, Year 10 students visited DS Smith in Burton Latimer who are a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, paper products and recycling services worldwide. During the visit students and staff (Mr Mason-Saunders and Miss Nathwani) were able to visit the production area where large rolls of paper are made into cardboard and students also looked at the different roles and apprenticeships the company offer.
Sixth Form Work Experience:
Mrs Lomas (Careers Advisor) and Mr Clark (Sixth Form Student Support Officer) have been working hard to place suitable students in work experience roles in commercial environments.
Year 13 student Seth will complete his work experience at the IBM headquarters in central London developing a AI chatbot system. IBM are so impressed with Seth, they have taken him off the work experience team and placed him upstairs with the project managers, and have extended the placement for another week.
Oscar S has met with Hays Travel and has bene offered an ongoing placement with a view to a permanent position following the completion of his studies.
Wiktor has secured a placement with a distillery and Jack B has secured his placement with Carmac, a nationwide civil engineering company.
Thomas Howe an interior design company based in in Belgravia were so impressed with Year 12 student Gabi's CV, they have confirmed a placement in 2024.
We are so proud of our students and the commitment they have shown and we really do have the
most employable students in Corby.
Pictured below are IBM, Howe and Hays travel.
