Instructional Minutes
As spring approaches, this is an opportune time to reflect on our recommended instructional minutes from the state and district. We also agreed upon moving to a shorter rest time in the spring. Some of you do need a full hour for rest time in order to have duty free lunches. Remember, it is a rest time, students are not required to sleep during this time.
3 Read Alouds per Day
120+ Minutes Centers & Small Group
45 Minutes outdoor time, split into morning and afternoon
15 Minutes Movement & Music
15-20 Minutes of Math
15-20 Minutes of Science
45 Minutes Rest/Spring Semester
Circle Time
This is a lot to fit into one day! Not every day will allow for everything. This is a perfect world scenario, and something for us to work towards. We can also keep this in mind as we look to build our classroom schedules for next year. If you would like help fitting something in, or making something work more efficiently please reach out to Lauren or your campus IC.

Did you know?
English Learners (EL), according to research, learn best through instruction that draws upon their strength in their first language. But it’s unlikely that a teacher would have knowledge of even a fraction of the languages that are spoken by students in American classrooms. Some large school districts report as many as a hundred different home languages. In this excerpt from their new book English Language Learners: The Essential Guide (Scholastic, 2007), experts David Freeman and Yvonne Freeman share 10 simple and effective ways to support your EL students by drawing on their first language—even if you do not speak their languages or teach in a school with a bilingual program.
- Host read alouds in student's primary languages
- Allow ELs to talk in their native language
- Build a classroom library in student's primary languages
- Pair a newcomer with a partner who speaks the same primary language
- Ensure that classroom environmental print represents students’ primary languages
