Food Processing

Students worked alongside Mr. Johnson to process a steer. They cut specific pieces of meat and all trimmings were used to make ground beef.

Culinary Arts

Students made vegetable stir fry with the support of Mrs. Garcia, our Assistant Principal. They learned cutting and measuring skills, gathered ingredients, and followed a specific recipe.

Welding

Welding students continue to progress towards their certifications and perfecting their skills. This week, they spent time learning the beginning steps to stick welding.

Community Involvement

Youth Leadership- Matagorda County

4 students were chosen to represent Van Vleck High School as members of Youth Leadership Matagorda County. Cadence, Tia, Tatum, and Jahrius attended their first event this past week where they toured the STP Joint Information Center and their Emergency Operations Facility. They observed an STP Emergency drill and then were treated to lunch while hearing from the Matagorda County Emergency Management Coordinator, Amanda Campos. They then toured the Matagorda County Courthouse for a tour of the building.

This program is designed to nurture and engage the leadership skills of potential future leaders by providing an atmosphere that stimulates and fosters diverse viewpoints, resulting in innovative answers to the critical questions facing our community. The program strives to create awareness and to connect students with issues; it is not an academic leadership training program. Young Leaders Matagorda Program includes community immersion, leadership training, and educating participants in "how things work" in our community and our county.

Youth Leadership Matagorda County offers engagement opportunities in an atmosphere that stimulates creative thinking and encourages participants to work together. They will utilize both new and proven tools to meet the challenges Matagorda faces today and better prepare our citizens for tomorrow.

The County Judge’s office established Youth Leadership Matagorda County this year as an “economic development” initiative that would serve our member enterprise efforts by building an active corps of engaged, dedicated civic leaders. It is his hope that Youth Leadership Matagorda County will grow to include all economically driven organizations in our County. Its goal is to produce graduates that are now challenging themselves through service to their school, future employers and our community in active community-building efforts.

Youth Leadership Matagorda County is designed to provide the participant:
• An awareness of community needs, challenges and opportunities by transforming our student leaders into business and civic leaders; and
• An opportunity to promote and establish relationships and share resources with other community volunteers and leaders county-wide; and
• The challenge to examine, practice, and develop leadership skills to develop students into people of influence.

Book Club

Mrs. Stell hosted her first book club meeting where students chose their first Tayshas book to read. Check out the library later this month to see their recommendations.

Members of the Student Council stayed after school to support members of the Texas Strategic Leadership Team who had children who needed supervision.

Fall athletes spent their morning welcoming students at Van Vleck Elementary. There was lots of Leopard spirts and excitement for the high fives. We think the elementary students enjoyed it too.

2 students from VVHS have earned academic honors from College Board. The honor recognizes the academic excellence and hard work in high school, showcased in their GPA and outstanding performance on PSAT and/or AP Exams.

Mr. Steiner, Mrs. Stewart, and Mrs. Dement celebrated the completion of a great Homecoming week after crowning our Queen and King.

Mrs. Dement was found moving chairs to help prepare the gym for the volleyball game after an exciting Pep Rally. And with a smile on her face.

Board Support

Mr. Kile took time to sweep up all the left overs of the homecoming mums to prepare the court for the volleyball team. We are thankful for our board members and their commitment to the VVISD team.

Commitment

Congratulations to Cadence A. and Olivia B. for committing to continue their education and athletic careers at the next level. We are so proud of both of you. Hard work and determination pays off.
