A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal
Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,
First week...check! Thanks for your patience and flexibility as we transition back into the building full of Longhorns, 2633 as of Friday! Yes, we are a FULL house, which means there is still LOTS of class leveling that the counselors are doing again this week and a few "back to school-post pandemic" kinks that we are working on. Have no fear, we did squeeze in a few spirit activities to get us rolling! Hawaiian day and a mini pep on Thursday down Main Street was an energy shot! Congrats to Ms. Holmes, Ms. Kaspar, and Ms. Suey's 4th period advisories and our LOTE department for having 100% participation in the Hawaiian Wear Spirit Day on Thursday and winning a Nacho Party with me on Friday!
Lanyards and Bus Passes
- LANYARDS W/GRHS ISSUED ID - We started passing (ID's, Lanyard, and plastic protector) out this week during lunches, but we are missing quite a few students right now, due to no picture being taken last year with Life Touch for our virtual learners in 8th and at GRHS. We are working on a plan to get this completed by the end of this week. Thanks for your patience. Remember that GRHS ID's must be VISIBLY WORN on the TOP half of your body. If you refuse, it will have disciplinary consequences. Being responsible for 2633 students is a big job, and I need for all GRHS staff to be able to identify and assist students quickly. Thanks for following this rule.
- BUS PASSES - are coming (if you happen to still have yours from last year, that will still work - AS LONG AS YOU DID NOT PUNCH A HOLE IN IT.) I have requested replacements to be printed for our bus riders at the district level. Until then, they will still allow you to ride on your designated bus. Thanks for your patience.
PARKING LOT UPDATES:
One obstacle with this many drivers at the ranch is the parking lot flow. Huge thanks to all the pick up parents and drivers for helping us make this traffic congestion as easy to maneuver as possible on Thursday and Friday. You are VERY appreciated.
BY NOW, ALL GRHS student and staff drivers MUST have the permanent parking pass hanging from their mirror in the front window and be parked in the coordinating parking spot starting Monday. If you are not, your car will be in danger of being towed. Please stop by the student service window if you still need assistance with purchasing this or to report that someone is in your spot. Please DO NOT park in the visitor spots, as this is a tow zone for students, and a needed spot by substitutes and campus visitors.
In the AM- please pull up as far as you can and let your student out of the car to enter the building (7:30 doors open - must go to designated wait area until 7:55) or wait under the covered awning if you are early. Please make sure you look to your left to make sure you are not pulling out in front of someone. The crosswalk has priority, so please stop and allow pedestrians walk safely across before you drive through.
In the PM- Thanks to all the parents that found a parking spot to pull in and wait for your Longhorn at dismissal. As you saw, lining both sides of the MAIN DRIVE WAY was a way to get more cars in and still have a "drive lane" in the center to pull out into and exit the parking lot. Double parking "INSIDE the parking lot" blocking parked cars is NOT ACCEPTABLE. There must be a way for the legally parked cars to exit the lot. Please find ANY available parking spot to pull into (unless it is handicap). Many of the spots open up from our early off seniors leaving for the day after 6th period, so this allows more parking spots for parents/guardians to pull into.
Friday dismissal dilemma - pick up parents/rides were lined up on 762 and having their Longhorn run across the parking lot and through the ditch to get in their car faster. This cannot keep happening, someone is going to get hurt or killed and I refuse to have that happen when it comes to saving 5-10 minutes on your drive home. Please stop doing this, and help us keep your Longhorn safe. Fort Bend County has been called to start issuing citations, so please find a spot to park in.
The reality is, if you are choosing to drive to/from GRHS this is going to take some time to get through the traffic, not only in our parking lot but down 762, which is completely uncontrollable on our end. Think of it like this...leaving the Ranch is like leaving a concert/event parking lot, the same patience and understanding is going to be needed by everyone. With your help, Friday the GRHS parking lots were completely CLEARED by 4:10. Let's keep helping each other! *Students cutting across the parking lot in the back (and not using the lanes) will have their parking pass pulled and will no longer be able to park at GRHS. Their safety is top priority, I want them coming back to us each day and filling the stands/bleachers/auditoriums to support our campus programs!
Schedules and Class Size Leveling
GRHS Counselors are still working on leveling and adjustments to schedules. As they get to your request that you MUST HAVE SUBMITTED BY THURSDAY AT 4:00PM they will be calling you in to discuss if it met the "posted" criteria and if it is even possible to make it happen. If you MISSED the Thursday deadline, you are staying put. This was announced each day by me personally in the mornings, during lunches, listed in the weekly news, and played during advisory announcements on Tuesday. Plenty of opportunities, now is time to buckle down and get some solid routines started.
Longhorns, thanks for choosing (and continuing) to be KIND and RESPECTFUL of everyone's individual mask choices! I am proud of you for making everyone feel included and safe to be at GRHS.
The front office is open Monday- Friday 8:00-4:00pm to assist you. You can also directly email us or call 832-223-4200 during the same hours. We are happy to help!
