It's been another awesome and BUSY week at Brookwood! From winter concerts, to sculpting clay snowmen, to girls cheer and boys basketball tryouts...the halls are buzzing with excitement!

Don't forget that the BFO Holiday Shop opens TONIGHT! Shopping at the Holiday Shop is a great way to give back to our schools. Our BFO elves will be onsite to help your child(ren)shop within their budget and gift wrap!! We hope to see you on any or all of the following times the shop is open:

Thank you for your ongoing partnership with us as we work to support ALL students to “Grow into Greatness.” In the coming weeks, students in grades 4-8 will be participating in the second of our triannual Measure of Academic Progress [MAP] test. MAP assessments are used to measure a student's growth over time in the areas of Mathematics, Reading, and Language Usage. Our staff uses the results of MAP tests, in conjunction with class level assessments and teacher input, to design academic supports and enrichments for students. Your student’s performance on this assessment does not affect any of his/her course grades, but it is very important to us from a programming standpoint. Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Franz if you have any additional questions regarding MAP.

This past Thursday, BMS student volunteers traveled to Lakeland Church in Delavan to help with packaging meals for the less fortunate. Students filled "One-Meal" pouches with rice and lentils, sealed bags, inspected, and packaged them for delivery. Our BMS volunteers helped in in prepping and packaging enough food to for 20,000 meals during our 1.5 hour shift. This was a fulfilling and empowering experience for our students and we look forward to doing this again in the future. Way to make us Mustang Proud!

Our 6-8 students had a BLAST last week Friday at their dance! Special thanks to Mr. Dittner and Mrs. Mosansky for organizing and Mr. Jewell from Sound & Light Services for DJing. Fun was had by ALL. Just check out the "Conga Line" below!

The Golden Horseshoe has moved on again...this time, to Mr. Dittner and Mrs. Mosansky! Previous recipient, Mrs. Nast, reports that, "Mr. Dittner and Mrs. Mosansky have given students an incredible opportunity to use their natural leadership skills and put them to use through student council. They have helped students share ideas and interests. They have raised funds through penny wars and supported the community hosting different food drives. They have also planned school wide events, including the dance last Friday night. Mr. Dittner and Mrs. Mosanky are such kind human beings and are an amazing example of leadership for our students and community." Congratulations to you both on receiving this highly coveted award!

Students observed going above and beyond in being kind, being safe, and/or being responsible are issued “BE BROOKWOOD” tickets throughout their school week. Each week we randomly select students from this group and acknowledge them in our morning announcements and in the weekly MUSTANG MINUTE. Help us congratulate the students that were drawn:

Since the beginning of November, the students in Mrs. Bullock's classes have been busy working on their music for the December Concert. They are becoming skillful and tuneful singers. They have learned about the role of the audience and how to be a good performer. The first graders learned about patterns in music. The second and third graders will be singing in two parts - something they have done very well with in the past, but this will be their first time showing it off for an audience.

Once students return from Winter Break, there is lots of new musical information in store for them. Second and third graders will be working learning the notes on the staff and the different kinds of instruments. All of the students are very strong at rhythm, now we will be playing some of the classroom instruments too. So much fun ahead!

Students in sixth-grade science class have been learning about thermal energy. They have been experimenting to discover if the lid of a cup is important to keep a drink hot or cold. Today, students developed a model to answer why the water in a cup decreased in temperature. Then, they made a prediction that answered the question, "If we left this system out in the room overnight, do you think the system would have the same amount of water in it tomorrow as it does right now?" Next week, we will be investigating that phenomenon, and students will be able to determine if their predictions were correct.

Cheerleading and boys’ basketball are off to a great start this week! We had so many students come out for the new sports season, and I am excited to see how these Mustangs perform! Congratulations to everyone who made the teams! Reminder to girls’ basketball players - please get your uniforms in to me ASAP. We will have another spiritwear store open in January after we come back from winter break.

We are SO excited to announce our first ever Ski Club at Grand Geneva!! This event is open to not only students but family members as well!! Are you an advanced skier or a beginner? This event is open to students but also open to family members. If there are children outside of the grade levels of 4th-8th grade attending, it is asked that parents oversee those other children.

Academic Lab will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when school is in session.

• Students will begin their study time with one of their teachers, right after school in that teacher’s classroom.

• At 3:20pm, students will then report to the Academic Lab in the library. A team of Academic Lab teachers will continue to help students in working on the tasks of focus, as assigned by their teacher.

• Academic Lab teachers will also assist students with putting any unfinished assignments needing to be completed into their assignment notebooks, so that families are in the loop of tasks that still need attention at home.

• Academic Lab will end at 4:25pm. Students will not be allowed to leave early unless a parent needs to pick them up sooner.

• The Late Bus will continue to be offered as afternoon transportation home from the Academic Lab, and will depart promptly at 4:30pm. (Note: The Late Bus will also still be available on Tuesdays for students in athletics).

Families: We need your help in giving our students the attention they need and deserve. We hope that you will take full advantage of this resource when your student is in need of additional support.

Throughout the school year Brookwood has many opportunities for parents to partner with the school through volunteering. Some of these will include, but not limited to, chaperoning field trips, assisting during classroom activities, large school or district wide events, etc. To ensure the safety of all our students, all volunteers need to submit and pass a background check. These forms can be completed ahead of time and individuals will be added to the approved volunteer list. This is good for the school year. If you intend to volunteer, feel free to complete the attached forms and send the forms to your child's school office. Thank you for your cooperation and involvement.
