Your Monthly School District Newsletter
Hello families,
Welcome to the new monthly newsletter where you’ll get the “CSD Top 3,” those three things we think you’d like to know, plus a wellness tip and the monthly lunch menu. We hope this will be an easy, enjoyable, and enlightening read.
The White Building
Recently, the Canby School District Board of Directors approved listing Carus’ old schoolhouse, known as “the white building,” for sale. The schoolhouse was built in 1926 and was originally deeded to Clackamas School District Number 9 by Isaac and Constance Farr. Beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the early 2000s, the building was used for administrative offices. In 2005, it was left vacant and boarded up.
The white building has historical value and is even considered a historic landmark. However, from a functional standpoint, it is no longer suitable for use by students and staff. So, the district is working with a consultant and has listed the building for sale at a price of $1 with a requirement that the buyer relocate the building.
If, after the process, the building is not sold, it will be torn down. Either way, the white building will be removed from Carus premises to pave the way for bond projects that will bring improved safety at the main entrance, better traffic flow, and more parking. We are excited about the potential benefits for the Carus community.
New Playgrounds
On behalf of the school district, we want to thank the community for your support of the 2020 bond, which allowed for the purchase of new play structures at Trost, Lee, Knight, and Eccles, with new structures coming to Carus and Ninety-One in 2022. Many of Canby’s elementary students have been enjoying the new playground equipment at their recess time! One popular attraction is the merry-go-round, and another is the ultra-wide slide—tested and approved by students and staff alike.

Student Spotlight
A Canby High School student, Jacob Palacios, earned the honor of performing with the national band at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana last week. He said the experience was “amazing!” Jacob is a junior at the high school and serves as the FFA chapter sentinel. He played the bass clarinet as the only Oregon student selected for the national band this year.
Jacob traveled ahead of the rest of the group of Canby students who also attended to compete, and he rehearsed with 53 other band members from around the country. The band then performed several times throughout the convention. They also had the chance to perform for the public at venues within the city.
Jacob comes from a family of FFA participants. Jacob’s mother Michelle served as a state FFA officer and even ran for a national office. His older sister Olivia also served as a state FFA officer and attended the national convention in the past. Olivia was the one who encouraged Jacob to audition for the national band. He intends to audition next year as well.
Congratulations to Jacob!
With flu season approaching and as COVID-19 continues to spread in the community, we want to partner with you to help ensure your students stay healthy. Please continue to remind your students to follow our COVID-19 health and safety protocols, which include staying home when they have symptoms, wearing a face covering over nose and mouth, practicing physical distancing, washing hands, and bringing a water bottle to school as fountains remain closed.
The best way to reduce the risk of contracting the seasonal flu, according to the CDC, is to get vaccinated every year. Flu shots are available at our local Canby pharmacies.
Additionally, follow these everyday tips to prevent the flu:
Stay home when you are sick
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects
