Dear TJUHSD Family,
As you know, Tulare County is one of the counties on the state’s monitoring list. This means that we are required to start the school year on Distance Learning. Once our county is removed from the monitoring list, we will transition to a hybrid model consisting of students attending their classes on campus. Families still need to choose between the hybrid model and the full-time distance learning model offered through Sierra Vista Charter High School. Once families make a choice for the fall semester (hybrid model, or full-time distance learning), that choice is for the entire semester. Additionally, Distance Learning this fall will look very different from what our students experienced in the spring. Students will have a schedule to follow, similar to our regular schedule, and attendance will be taken. We will also revert to our regular grading policy where students will be required to demonstrate proficiency of the learning standards to earn a passing grade.
What is the reopening plan for 2020-2021?
TJUHSD is starting the year on Distance Learning. Once our county is removed from the monitoring list, we will transition to a hybrid model consisting of students attending their classes on campus. If you do not want your child to attend classes in person this semester, you still need to choose full-time distance learning through Sierra Vista Charter. This choice is for the full fall semester. Please complete the following form by July 31st to request full-time Distance Learning https://url.tjuhsd.org/dls. The first day of school is August 13, 2020. Information on school orientations will be sent to our families from each school site.
What is the school calendar for 2020-2021?
The calendar that was approved for 2020-2021 has not changed. The school year will still consist of 180 school days and the planned school holidays. Here is a link to the calendar bit.ly/TJUHSD2020calendar.
What will student schedules look like?
Students and teachers will have schedules to follow similar to our regular schedule. The schedule will consist of synchronous instruction (live instruction via Zoom with the teacher). Students will also be assigned additional activities to complete that build on the synchronous instruction. Google Classroom and other tools will be used to assign and collect student work. The schedule can be accessed at bit.ly/TJUHSDbellschedule
Will my student be required to participate in the live scheduled instruction time through Zoom?
What if my child does not have a Chromebook?
We have Chromebooks for all of our students. Freshmen will receive their Chromebooks during Freshmen Orientation. Accelerated Charter, Tech Prep and Countryside will also provide Chromebooks for their students to use at home. We have hotspots that can be requested for students who do not have reliable high-speed internet. We will also provide tech support for the Chromebooks. Students who are experiencing issues with their Chromebook should send an email to chromebook@tulare.k12.ca.us or call us at (559) 656-5255.
What is the grading policy for Distance Learning?
We will revert to our regular grading policy where students will be required to demonstrate proficiency of the learning standards to earn a passing grade. In addition, to the scheduled live Zoom instruction, students will also be assigned asynchronous activities to complete that build on the synchronous instruction
What if my child currently qualifies for the free breakfast and lunch program?
Will there be targeted supports and interventions for English learners and Special Education students?
English Language Development courses will continue to be offered at each school site through Zoom. Additional ELD support to our students will also be provided through our ELD coaches.
As required by law, IEPs will guide the instruction and support provided for our Special Education students. The supports provided will vary based on the needs of each individual student.
What if my child has an IEP meeting scheduled?
Will there be an opportunity for my student to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports?
Closing Comments:
We will be creating a committee of parents, students, teachers, classified employees and administrators to provide ongoing feedback on our Distance Learning. This will allow us to better support our students and teachers through Distance Learning. Please complete this form if you are interested in participating in this committee.
Please make sure that we have your correct contact information. You can use the Aeries portal to update your information or you may contact the school site office. We will be sending you specific information regarding student orientations. Thank you for your partnership, trust and understanding during this unprecedented time.
