Calendar Updates
It's hard to believe that we are halfway through March! Here are a few calendar reminders for April:
Quarter 3 ends on April 8. This is also the due date for any semester one credit recovery, so please check that your student is on track for the quarter as well as any remaining items from first semester, if applicable.
Spring break is April 11-15; students return on April 19 (an A day), as the day before is a teacher work day.
As a reminder, students are still able to access math lab along with our new learning lab as well as peer tutors as part of Bright Knights. Please encourage your student to utilize class time for educational purposes and seek extra help from the learning lab or peer tutors during their study hall.
MAP Scores
Winter MAP score reports are available. Please select your preferred language to read the notification letter:
Safety
School zone speed limit signage exists on Northstar Boulevard, but the traffic volume continues to increase and will become more unsafe for pedestrian crossing with ongoing construction and road extension.
Students on the east side of Northstar are provided LCPS transportation and are urged to use this service. Students walking or biking to school should cross Northstar only at the designated crosswalk at Conejo Way/Mattingly Drive. Sacred Mountain Street is not a signalized intersection,
Along with that, please remind your student(s) that student parking is available for those driving to campus. Under no circumstances should students park along Northstar or other neighborhood streets and then dart across the road to campus.
Athletics Mulch Sale
Please check out the info for the mulch sale in the CHARGE Up section below!
Looking forward
John Champe is celebrating a decade of success in our community. Please stay tuned for ways you can celebrate our ten year journey and support us for many more years of excellence. There will be sponsorship opportunities for families and businesses to contribute for different levels of recognition and ways to connect with us during the celebration, which will coincide with our 2022 Homecoming in September.
MAGIC Makers
At the March faculty meeting, Mr. Tyson recognized all long-term and site-based substitutes for their contributions to JCHS. He then announced three MAGIC Makers:
Ms. Gordon, for going above and beyond in supporting kids to mastery of material.
Mr. Baltzer, for being a team player extraordinaire and always being ready to engage students despite being busy with new course preps.
Mr. Kimball, for being a constant source of help and encouragement, especially with the mental health and academic success of his students.
Congrats, and thank you all so much for your hard work.
Little Knights Preschool
The lottory for the 2022/23 school year program for Little Knights Preschool is open! A course for our JCHS students to explore the possibility of a career in Early Childhood Education, Little Knights is also a great way for 3.5 - 5 year olds to gain exposure to a classroom setting and increase Kindergarten readiness. Click here for more program details; click here for the lottery registration form.
Counseling
Thank you to everybody who made the Evening of Excellence in Education a wonderful event; special appreciation to Ms. Karen King for organizing a wonderful program for the 31 students we recognized.
In honor of National School Social Work Week, we'd like to thank our school's social worker, Sophia Khan-Reed, for her part in helping students achieve success at school. Although new to Champe, Ms. Reed jumped right in to help students deal with mental health and behavioral challenges and provide academic and classroom support.
On behalf of the Champe community, we thank you for your support, knowledge and care for our students and Champe community.
Academic Advising meetings have come to a close. April 22 is the last day for changes to course selection for the 2022-23 school year.
March 13-19 is Sleep Awareness Week. Sleep deprivation affects your psychological state and mental health. Sufficient sleep, especially REM sleep, facilitates the brain’s processing of emotional information. During sleep, the brain works to evaluate and remember thoughts and memories, and it appears that a lack of sleep can influence mood and emotional reactivity.
How much sleep do you really need?
Teenagers: As kids get older, their need for sleep decreases slightly. Teens (14-17 years) require about eight to 10 hours of nightly sleep.
Adults: Between the ages of 18 and 64, adults should aim for seven to nine hours of nightly sleep. If you’re older than 65, you may need a little less: seven to eight hours is recommended.
Improve Your Sleep Quality
- Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. It’s important for your body to have a regular sleeping schedule.
- Set a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to calming music, reading a book or taking a warm bath.
- Make sure your bedroom is cool. Your body temperature naturally decreases to initiate sleep. A bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit helps promote sleep.
- Make sure your bedroom is quiet. Turn off noisy distractions such as a TV. Silence unwanted noise with earplugs or use “white noise,” such as from a fan, sound machine or an app.
- Make sure your bedroom is dark. Use blackout shades to block out unwanted light and dim the lights on your digital clock.
- Sleep on a mattress and pillows that are comfortable and supportive.
- Finish eating meals 2-3 hours before bedtime.
- Exercise regularly. A low-impact fitness program, like walking, swimming or yoga, is helpful for managing pain and stiffness and improving sleep.
- Try to limit how many caffeinated products you consume in the afternoon.
