Mrs. Shaffer’s STEM Update
We continued this week with 3rd-5th graders and coding, but we switched to using Bitsbox. Bitsbox is a program where students create apps on a pretend tablet using a modified Java Script. They really enjoy it and it’s a great way to practice their language arts skills. If the code isn’t typed exactly right, it doesn’t work. It makes them have to pay attention to spelling and conventions. It’s a program I really like and one that students can do at home with what they’ve learned at school, or through getting a subscription to Bitsbox.
Next week the plan is to introduce virtual reality through our Class VR headsets. Students will have the opportunity to spend 5-10 minutes exploring different worlds through our VR goggles. Please know that I sanitize each pair between students using them. Our first time using them will just be an exploration and how-to session. Later in the year I will be able to make connections with science and social studies lessons to take students on virtual field trips. It’s very exciting!
Please feel free to email me with any questions.
