LOST RIVER COMMUNITY CENTER: MORE THAN A BUILDING
Construction of a new community center for Lost River got underway in July following five years of planning and fundraising by the Lost River Booster Club and community supporters. In a groundbreaking ceremony July 17 overlooking the recently poured cement foundation of the 13,500-square-foot building, more than 30 people gathered to celebrate the exhaustive effort that raised enough money to make a community’s dream a reality. DEEP INTO RESEARCH
Nine students from the Klamath County School District were among 25 high school students chosen to attend a two-week “deep dive” shadowing experience this summer at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.
The two-week program is part of the On Track OHSU! Summer Research Experience. KCSD partners with On Track OHSU! at Chiloquin Junior/Senior High and Mazama High School. Created in 2013, On Track OHSU! works with middle and high schools to increase the number of students from underrepresented minority backgrounds in the health sciences and in Oregon's biomedical workforce.
Seven Chiloquin Junior/Senior High School students applied for and were accepted into the summer experience program. Those students were joined by one student from Mazama High School, one student from the Great Basin Homeschool program, and 16 students from Madras High School, Woodburn High School, and Jefferson High School.
Transportation to and from the Portland area was provided through collaborations with the KCSD Title VI Program, the Klamath Tribes Transportation Department, and the Klamath Tribes Education and Employment Department. The students each received an $800 stipend for completing the program.
INTRODUCING OUR NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER
Klamath County School District Board of Directors appointed a new board member in June to fill a position vacated by Laura Blair.
Brooke KIiewer will represent the Henley and Keno attendance areas, serving until June 30, 2025, the remainder of Blair’s term.
Kliewer was among five applicants for the position. The four current school board members – Steve Lowell, John Rademacher, Jill O’Donnell, and Marc Staunton – interviewed three of the applicants at the June 15 regular board meeting. Two applicants were eliminated from consideration because they were unable to attend the board interviews.
Her goals as a board member include focusing on academics – math, reading, and writing -- and ensuring KCSD policies reflect the values of the community.
“I want to see the school district thrive now and in the future by strengthening academics, (providing) smaller class sizes, and being an advocate for offering electives that focus on life skills and learning the trades,” she said.
Kliewer and her husband, Ty, have two school-age children. She has lived in the community for 20 years and started her career in Klamath Falls as a substitute teacher for the school district. She also taught animal science at Klamath Community College. She has worked as a commercial loan officer for the past 12 years.
“These experiences have given me the skills to understand the classroom environment, to understand finances and budgeting, and to follow procedures and policies while also being creative to think outside the box and find solutions to achieve goals,” she said.
Kliewer currently volunteers as a 4-H leader, secretary for the Lost River FFA Alumni Association, and as a member of the Klamath County OSU Experiment Station Advisory Board. She is a former board member of the Klamath Lake Counties Food Bank and has volunteered for school activities and events.
