Alumni Spotlight - Where are they now?
Jayst Dorian - Fire & Emergency Services Academy Graduate
I started RC3’s Fire Academy my junior year of high school. I’ve been working for the Hoover Fire Department for a year and seven months now. I’m also is paramedic school. RC3’s Fire Academy gave me knowledge and discipline to graduate, get my EMT Basic License, complete Fire College, and submit an application to Hoover Fire Department. I’m beyond blessed and grateful for RC3 and the instructors. They give graduates the tools needed to start their careers quickly (in my case 8 months)!
Jayden Watson - Skilled Trades Academy Graduate
My name is Jayden Watson, and I work for Myrick Gurosky + Assocaites as a laborer. Normally I help the superintendent with some of the work he does in the field. One example would be shooting grade for a submittal or relaying information to the subcontractors. A big part of my job is keeping the job site clean and prepared for work. Sometimes that means that I clean up, or I make sure the subcontractor cleans up. I also do little side projects too, that ranges from framing a temporary door or building hand rails to concrete patch work. With me being a general laborer, I’m not stuck to a specific craft so I get to do a little bit of everything. I’ve learned so much from this job and hopefully it will make me a good superintendent one day. If I would have to give anyone advice about working in a skilled trade, it would be its okay to make mistakes because you learn better from your mistakes than someone telling you how to do it.
Adult Teen Day
RC3 seniors had the unique opportunity to participate in the first Adult Teen Day at RC3. Students rotated through various sessions designed to prepare them for life after RC3. Session topics included:
- Roadside Skills

- Self Defense

- Ways to Protect Yourself from Fraud
- How to Speak to Your Doctor About Your Health
Guest speakers from UAB, Hoover City Schools Human Resources Department, Tameron Honda, Regions Bank, Cadence Bank, and the Hoover Police Department led the sessions and participated in a panel discussion with students.
No Kid Sleeps On The Floor In Our Town
RC3 partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to make beds for children in need. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. They are a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. Their motto: No kid sleeps on the floor in our town! RC3 skilled trades academy built 10 twin beds and books, toiletries, pillows, sheets, night lights, and stuff animals were collected by our other academies and English and Math classes.
Pancakes with Santa
RC3 was transformed into a winter wonderland for children that registered for Pancakes with Santa. Participants witnessed Santa arrive on a firetruck. As entered the building, he spread greetings and cheer to all. Guests were able to meet Santa, take photos, and enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by our Culinary & Hospitality Academy students. As an added bonus, the Grinch made an appearance at the breakfast. A special thank you is extended to the committee, faculty, staff, and student volunteers for making this event a success.

News from the Nurse
There are steps you can take to prevent spreading influenza to others:
Wash hands often, especially after coughing, sneezing and wiping or blowing nose.
Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
Use paper tissues when wiping or blowing the nose: throw tissues away after each use.
Stay away from crowded living and sleeping spaces, if possible
Keep hands away from eyes, nose and mouth.
A sick child is advised to stay at home during the first days of illness when symptoms are most severe and the infection is contagious. He/She can return to school when his/her temperature has been less than 100 degrees for 24 hours without the help of any medication to help him/her be fever free.
