Weekly Update - October 21, 2022
Strive Center for Autism
EARLY DISMISSAL
We will have an early dismissal (1 hour early - pick up at 2:20 for a full report from your therapist) on Friday, October 28th. Our staff will be heading to the U of M Flint Inclusive Halloween event (see above) to set up our trick or treat table! In addition, we will have our Halloween parties at both centers this day. We hope that you'll join us at the Inclusive Halloween event, or enjoy another fun fall activity with your family!

Anyone else looking forward to winter???
It is getting colder, and we will continue to go outside daily unless it is below 20 degrees. Please send your child with a warm jacket and any needed accessories!
If your child is struggling with adjusting to the changes in clothing, please let your BCBA know. We can work on wearing what's needed for the weather.
When we have snow on the ground, we prefer that kids come with boots, snow pants, and mittens or gloves daily. We can send the items home daily so you'll have them at home too! This is a great opportunity for kids to practice putting on and taking off their winter gear, which is a helpful skill for school.
Immediate morning openings in both locations
We have openings in both our Burton and Brighton locations for ABA therapy in the morning. Morning sessions begin at 8:30am and can end at 11:30am or 12:30pm, depending on the family's needs.
Our best advertising is word of mouth, so please share with your friends and family who might benefit from our services! Families can call 810-344-8082 to arrange a tour of either location, and we can start a new family just as soon as the insurance can process the request.
Meet Keirsten, RBT and Lead Therapist
Keirsten started working at the Strive Center for Autism in May 2018. Keirsten and her husband moved to Germany in 2020 where she worked as an RBT in Kornwestheim, Germany. In 2021 she moved back to Michigan and came back to Strive!
Keirsten holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Saginaw Valley State University.
Keirsten loves to travel and see new places whenever she can. In her spare time she likes to keep busy playing sports, camping, hiking and loves to be outside. She also enjoys going to craft shows, especially in the Fall.
Caregiver Appreciation
We hope you enjoyed this afternoon's Caregiver Appreciation! If you weren't able to join us this time, we host one event every month. We rotate between morning and afternoon times so that all of our families have a chance to attend.
Caregiver Appreciation events are an opportunity for us to thank the caregivers who bring our children to therapy every day! They are also a great opportunity to meet other caregivers and make new connections with people who understand your family.
In Burton, we host it in Garrett's Place (our back building.) We have coffee and treats for any caregivers who'd like to stop by.
In Brighton, we host at the Coffee Beanery next door. You'll turn in your ticket and order your coffee on us.
Our next Caregiver Appreciation is on November 18th at 8:30 am. This will be our last Caregiver Appreciation for 2022, as December is a shorter therapy month and a very busy time! We'll send home a list of dates for next year with the calendar.
Halloween Fun Activities
For Halloween, we will be having our parties at the centers on Friday, October 28. We realize that Halloween is the following Monday, but Friday is definitely a better day to have a party and lots of silly activities!
For the party, you may send a costume with your child if you'd like, but it is not required.
Parents do NOT need to send anything else - we will set up trick or treating stations with edible and non-edible treats and the kids will trick or treat and participate in other fun activities.
If your child does not enjoy wearing a costume, but you'd like him to learn to tolerate one, please send your costume in anytime, and we will work with him on getting used to the costume and wearing it. If you need help choosing a sensory friendly costume, ask your BCBA for ideas - we are full of creative ways to make things work!
See below for info on the U of M Flint Inclusive Halloween activity on 10/28 too!
U of M Flint Inclusive Halloween
At Inclusive Halloween, everyone is invited, everyone is included, and everyone is welcomed. It is a safe, judgment-free zone where the entire family can relax and have fun.
Staff from Strive Center will be sponsoring a table at the event and handing out treats.
We'd love to see as many of our families as possible enjoying this FREE and inclusive event.
We attended in 2019, and it is a great way to trick or treat - it's indoors, there are 2 large rooms with lots of fun treats (edible and non-edible), and everyone is accepted.
Here is a link to more information about the event.

Autism Language Use Study
We are sharing this info on behalf of a group of researchers who reached out to us. Please feel free to complete the study or share it with anyone who would be interested.
Autism Language Use Study
Are you autistic, or a parent/caregiver of a person on the autism spectrum, or a professional who works with autistic people? We want to hear from you!
Our team of autistic and neurodivergent researchers is recruiting for a short, online survey about words and phrases used when talking about autism. We would like to learn more about the preferences of autistic people, their parents/caregivers, and professionals who work with people on the autism spectrum to inform recommendations for supportive language that center autistic voices. The survey is anonymous and will take about 10 - 20 minutes to complete. This research is approved by the IRB at Emory University. To participate, please click the link:
