April brings warmer weather along with spring testing, our third and fourth grade students will begin M-Step Testing starting the week of April 18th through May 20th. Please make sure to talk your children about the importance of doing their best and taking their time on the test. In addition, make sure that they are well rested with a good night's sleep and are present each day.

- Read everyday! Ask questions to promote comprehension skills
- Be positive; speaking well of school and learning
- Create a consistent after-school routine
- Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep so they are fresh for learning each morning
- Teach your child to be responsible for their actions.

Hello First Grade Families
Hooray! It seems as if Spring has sprung here at Rawsonville! Please make sure to check the daily forecast so that your child is dressed for the weather. We will be going outside unless it is raining or super muddy. As the weather gets nicer and we start to spend more time outside, please make some time each night to do homework and to read with your child. It is so important for them to continue to build their sight vocabulary, reading fluency, and story retelling skills. Reading for just 15 minutes each night can help boost your child's reading skills drastically! Plan a trip to the local public library and check out some books. You might find some new favorite stories to read together! As always, let us know if you have any questions!
Your First Grade Teachers,
Mrs. Garden, Mrs. Mounsey, and Mrs. Stremer
Greeting Second Grade Families
We will continue our fairytales and fables unit. Students will be creating their own fairytale to share with their class. We are very excited for the final event...The Fairytale Ball! Students may dress fancy on this day. We will be decorating crowns to wear, as well.
In math, second graders will be focused on adding and subtracting multi digit numbers with regrouping (carrying and borrowing), as well as gathering and representing data using different types of graphs. Students will also be exploring arrays, length, and shapes for this final marking period. Let’s work together to finish the year strong!
We have one more marking period to close learning gaps and get students ready for 3rd grade. Thank you for all of your support!
Educationally yours,
The Second Grade Team
Mrs. Albulov, Mrs. Brashear, Ms. Carlin, and Mrs. Tibbs
Hey there Third Grade Families
Yay! We have made it to April! Please make sure that your child stays happy and healthy by being aware of Covid prevention practices!!! We have been working on area, perimeter, multiplication, division, and fractions in math. Make sure that your child practices their multiplication facts daily. In reading we continue to work on comprehension of the texts that we are reading. Have your child read a selection daily and tell you about what they read. It is also a good idea to have them read a non-fiction selection (a true story, an age appropriate news article, something about sports or animals). Often times non-fiction texts can be more difficult to understand. During the month of April, we will also be preparing for our state testing that will be coming up in May. Ask your child what their goals are for this marking period.
Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Love, and Mrs. Pettway
Hello Fourth Grade Families
There is no question about it...the sunshine and warmer temps are surely a welcoming seasonal change! Please partner with the fourth grade team in helping to make sure your child completes nightly homework assignments, study weekly spelling lists, and strives to engage in positive school behavior. It is typical at this time of year to experience exuberant behavioral changes, but we must successfully work together to make sure our students/children are focusing on the Leader in Me Habits of "Putting First Things First" and "Synergize".
April is National Poetry Month. Our students will be been working on learning different poetry structures (Haiku, Couplet, Cinquain, Quatrain, Diamante, Acrostic, etc.) and how authors use literary devices such as rhyming, repetition, similes, metaphors, and syllabication). We are so excited to see their creativity come alive in their writing this month. Throughout the month, have your child make observations in their personal environment and have your child create a short poem for you...pure enjoyment:)
Want to learn something funny...The month of April is also recognized for National Pillow Fight Day. Be playful as a family, but please be safe! Don't let the feathers go a flyin`.
Please don't forget to send in a healthy snack for your child. Daily snack is from 10:50am-11:00am, thank you so much. As always, please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions or concerns.
Educationally yours,
Ms. Ali, Ms. Dagenais, and Mrs. Gyulveszi
Special Education
Children rely on adults to create structure. A cognitive skill set called “executive function” includes all of judgment and planning. Anything that seems to require “management” in life, from attention to projects to emotions, relies on these abilities. But they are not fully developed until our late 20s. Adults have the only grown-up brain in the house, so kids rely on us for those skills quite often. A consistent after school schedule will cut down on arguing about homework and fill a child’s evenings in a useful way. It is also emotionally reassuring for kids to have familiar routines. On a practical level, many children focus better when given a single task (start with reading a story …) for a set amount of time (… from 7:30 to 8:00). A strong after school plan may therefore create space for you to get your grown-up work done, too.

Time TBA
As the weather continues to get warmer, please make sure your child still has a sweatshirt, or sweater to bring to Art, Media, Music and Gym. The temperatures can continue to be a bit chilly at times, so it is best to dress in layers, or have a spare long-sleeved item of clothing at school.

Staying safe from COVID-19 Information... We all need to do our part to keep schools open to in-person learning
The mask mandate has been lifted and is now recommended but not mandatory.
Maintaining the health and safety of our school community is of utmost importance, particularly during this unprecedented pandemic situation. Providing a safe environment is a partnership between parents/guardians and the school district. VBPS has put into place many measures to keep our students and staff safe while they are in school. We ask that our parents and guardians help to prevent the spread of COVID, as well as other illnesses by:
- Following the COVID-19 checklist guidelines
- Reporting to the nurse if your child or any household member tests positive for COVID, or if they have an actual or suspected COVID exposure
- Keeping your child home when they are sick,
- Promptly picking your child up if they become sick at school,
- Alerting the school nurse about any planned travel to discuss the required post-quarantine guideline, prior to sending your child back to school
Please contact Nurse Dionisia Munoz with any questions or concerns related to COVID-19 or other health-related issues involving the school. dmunoz@vanburenschools.net
Students who are sick must not attend school. If a student presents to be sick when at school they will be sent home and provided instructions about the possible need to quarantine. Siblings of students who are ill may also need to quarantine. We rely on our County Health Department to guide us accordingly.
