Operating Millage and Sinking Fund Proposals
Dear Buchanan Community Schools Friends, Families, and Community Members,
On February 27, 2024, Buchanan Community Schools will have two renewal proposals on the ballot. These proposals will not increase taxes and will continue what is currently levied.
The district will ask the community to consider renewing the following proposals:
Proposal 1 - Operating Millage Renewal Ballot Language: This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its full revenue per pupil foundation allowance and renew millage that will expire with the 2024 tax levy.
Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation of 18.4001 mills ($18.4001 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) on the amount of taxes that may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Buchanan Community Schools, Berrien County, Michigan, be renewed for a period of 10 years, 2025 to 2034, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 18 mills are levied in 2025 is approximately $2,967,755 (this is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2024 tax levy)?
Proposal 2 - Sinking Fund Millage Renewal Ballot Language: This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the building and site sinking fund millage that expires with the 2024 tax levy. Shall the currently authorized millage rate of 0.7919 mill ($0.7919 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) which may be assessed against all property in Buchanan Community Schools, Berrien County, Michigan, be renewed for a period of 8 years, 2025 to 2032, inclusive, to continue to provide for a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings and all other purposes authorized by law; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2025 is approximately $393,833 (this is a renewal of millage that expires with the 2024 tax levy)?
Additional information regarding the proposals may be found at www.buchananschools.com/millage-2024. On this website, you will find two informational videos, quick facts about both proposals and FAQs. We pledge our best efforts to make Buchanan Community Schools a premier school district, and we strive to create safe, welcoming, engaging, and innovative schools that develop all students’ academic, athletic, artistic, and social growth. We take pride in our community and we appreciate the support of our stakeholders! Thank you!
But we do realize that sometimes something might not go right, or you might have a question about what we do or how we do it. We welcome that communication, and we will work to solve your issue for you as efficiently as we can.
In order to do that, we ask that you follow our Chain of Command process shown in the diagram. On the left side of the process chart, you will see the common areas of district programming, and then following to the right would be the next step(s) in the Chain of Command for that district program area. Please start by contacting the staff member listed in the second box of each program area. The contact information for our leadership staff members with responsibility for addressing concerns is listed at the top of the diagram. Other contact information for building staff is available on our website in the “Staff Directory” section of each building’s web page. It is expected that most issues should be able to be resolved at these initial steps in the Chain of Command.
