Message from the Principal
Love was in the air at STCMS, with students participating in many Valentine's Day themed activities over the past few weeks. Also, STEM related activities are happening all over the Middle School in various grade levels and subject areas as we make a push to challenge students with critical thinking skills and creativity.
I would like to give a 'shout out" to Mr. Elliott for his efforts in securing a grant to help provide some much needed lab equipment to our Science department.
Please see The Miracle League of the Ohio Valley is offering a baseball league for students/adults with disabilities. More information can be found in the "What's Coming Up" section of the newsletter.
Finally, a reminder that school fees need to be paid. If you have any questions about how much your child may owe, please contact the office at 740-695-1591.
~Mr. McKeever

Erin's Law
Recently, Erin's Law (House Bill 33, Section 3313.60) has been passed in Ohio, which mandates abuse prevention education for students grades K-12. Specifically, it mandates that grades K-6 receive annual developmentally appropriate instruction in child sexual abuse prevention, personal safety and assault prevention. This instruction is to include information on available counseling and resources for children who are sexually abused. A student shall be excused from taking instruction in child sexual abuse prevention upon written request of the student's parent or guardian. For more information on Erin's law and the requirements from the Ohio Department of Education, please visit the following websites: https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Student-Supports/School-Wellness/Prevention-Education/Child-Sexual-Abuse-Dating-Violence-Sexual-Violence

The Miracle League of the Ohio Valley
The Miracle League of the Ohio Valley invites your students and families of children/adults with disabilities to join us on Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 11:00 - 2:00 at the YMCA of Wheeling for The Miracle League Spring Baseball registration. The Miracle League plays an adaptive game of baseball on a rubberized field made specifically for the safety and ease of movement for those with a disability. In addition to adaptive baseball (where anything goes), The Miracle League hosts a variety of other sports, clinics, holiday programs/celebrations, arts and crafts, etc... throughout the year. As an added perk, each player and one parent/guardian will receive a pass to the YMCA at no cost. This is a GREAT program that allows those with disabilities to be accepted, play an organized sport, and just have fun! By the way, all games are two innings and end in a tie, but man, the smiles on their faces are PRICELESS!

#3 In Case You Missed It
Valentine's Day / President's Day Acitivity
Mrs Hanna’s 6th Grade math students combined Valentine’s Day and President’s Day with a STEM Project. Students constructed replicas of presidential monuments using candy hearts and icing as building materials.
8th Grade ELA The Outsiders
Love was in the air, as 8th graders transformed into characters from The Outsiders. They wrote their “crush” a letter, using character information and dialogue from S. E. Hinton’s masterpiece. (Teens didn’t have texting in the 1960s!) Students folded their notes into hearts and passed them to their storied “crush,” hoping for a reply.
ROCKET RACER STEM PROJECT
Students in Mrs. Evick's 5th grade science classes have been working through their forces and motion unit by constructing rocket racers. Students were given the materials to build their cars and then run them in three trials to determine which car traveled the straightest and farthest. After each trial students problem-solved to make improvements to their cars and completed a NASA project packet for a grade. Newton's Laws of Motion and forces that act on objects were the learning targets for this activity.
Mrs. Clifford's Valentine's Day Math Lesson
To celebrate Valentine's Day, students were partnered up and given broken hearts that were represented by a system of equations waiting to be solved. Their task was to find the solution to each equation, symbolizing the mending of these broken hearts. Students buzzed around the room quickly solving the equation to be rewarded with heart-shaped candy. Working with their teammates made for a memorable day!
