Please note: These learning opportunities are in addition to our academic summer school for students who are experiencing learning loss or who are behind in credits. Students who qualified for our academic program were contacted by their schools. This program is serving 650 students.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS!

Grades 4-6

Dates: June 14-17, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Chiloquin Elementary for grades 4-6 (maximum of 20 students)

Instructor: Taryn Beals

Course description: Students will be able to see the wonders of the world, without leaving home! We will be looking at Jules Verne's classic, "Around the World in 80 Days." One continent at a time, we will look at natural and man-made marvels. Each student will have a travel journal and can earn passport stamps for every country they finish.

EXPLORING THE WETLANDS

Grades K-3

Dates: June 21-24; 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Peterson Elementary for grades K-3 (maximum of 20 students)

Instructors: Amber McDonald and Geralyn Smith

Course description: We will study local wetland ecosystems. Our study will include plant and animal identification. We will incorporate movement, art, literature, writing, and field trips to local wetland areas.

STEM CAMP

Grades 3-6

Dates (two options):

• June 14-17 at Peterson Elementary, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades 3-6. (maximum of 20 students)
• June 21-24 at Peterson Elementary, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades 3-6. (maximum of 20 students)

Instructors: Amanda Hulsey and Jonathon McCormick

Course Description: Each day, we will have hands-on science projects to explore and then take home. Activities will include making a light-up quiz board, creating artistic sun prints, building a replica sports stadium, and playing with wind tunnels.

ADVANCED STEM CAMP

For kids who have finished 3-5 grades AND completed STEM experience during spring break or in one of the first two sessions.

Dates: June 28-July 1 at Peterson Elementary, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades 3-6. (maximum of 20 students)

Instructors: Amanda Hulsey and Jonathon McCormick

Course Description: Each day, we will have hands-on science projects to explore and then take home. Activities will include playing with marbles and magnetism, having fun with air pressure, and dabbling in some chemistry.

THEATER EXPERIENCE

Grades K-6

Dates (three options):

• July 14-17 at Peterson Elementary, 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades kindergarten through 6th.
• July 21-24 at Peterson Elementary, 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades kindergarten through 6th.
• July 28-July 1 at Peterson Elementary, 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the gymnasium for grades kindergarten through 6th.

Instructors: Amanda Hulsey and Jonathon McCormick

Course Description: Each day, we will play theater games, practice characters, talk about costumes and props, etc. We will also create a play based on a well-known children’s story and then we will perform that play for family members on Thursday evening, 6 – 7 p.m. All students who want a part will have one in our performance. There will also be opportunities for kids to work “backstage” if they don’t want a performing part.

BIKE SAFETY AND INDOOR ARCHERY

Grades 5-6

Dates: June 14-17 at Shasta Elementary, 8 – 11 a.m. in the inside gymnasium. For grades 5 and 6. (20 students maximum)

Instructors: Tiffany Poe and Theresa Ross

Course Description: During the first 90 minutes, students will need to know how to ride a bike. We will practice basic bike skills and learn basic street safety. We will finish the week with a short neighborhood ride. Students will then transition to the outside gym for basic archery. Students will begin with a “string” bow to learn safety and shooting procedures. They will then move to shooting 20-pound compound bows at indoor targets. Culminating in a basic target competition.

ART IN THE PARK

Grades 4-6

Dates and times (three options):

• June 14-17. Grades 4-6. Bus will depart from Stearns Elementary at 12:30 p.m. for Moore Park and return at 3:00 p.m. (10 students maximum)
• June 21-24. Grades 4-6. Bus will depart from Ferguson Elementary at 12:30 p.m. for Moore Park and return at 3:00 p.m. (10 students maximum)
• June 28-July 1. Grades 4-6. Bus will depart from Peterson Elementary at 12:30 p.m. for Moore Park and return at 3:00 p.m. (10 students maximum)

Instructor: Tonya Magness

Course description: Students will take a bus to Moore Park and back to school. They will be given a sketch book and art supplies. They will create a botany field guide, paint the lake and other landscapes of Moore Park. Students should dress in appropriate clothing, bring water and sunscreen and a hat.

The Klamath County School District is providing free adventure vouchers for K-12 students. Options include specialized camps, kayaking, ziplining, swim passes, and more! You just need to sign up and your choice of voucher will be mailed to you.
