CMIT South Elementary School
Week of November 27, 2022

Friday, April 21, 2023
Principal's Desk
Greetings Tiger Family,
We have started MCAP testing in earnest! Thank you, families, for making sure students are arriving on time and prepared to demonstrate to the state of Maryland how hard we work as a school community, here at CMIT South Elementary. Next week we will have MCAP testing with the 5th grade April 24-28, followed by the 4th grade May 1-4, and wrapped up with the 3rd grade May 8-12. Once MCAP is finished we will move to NWEA MAP testing for Reading and Math K-5 at the school level and DIBELS reading testing for grades K-3 at the county level. Please continue supporting your Tiger’s success through consistent academic practice and extensions at home and regular on-time school attendance.
I also want to recognize all of our parent volunteers and chaperones who have attended field trips and supported us throughout the year. We have several upcoming field trips, field days, and promotions occurring in the 4th quarter. Please ensure you have completed background checks and volunteer applications to support. Families, also have conversations with your students regarding appropriate bathroom behavior, utilizing restrooms not as a social gathering place, but for their intended purpose. We are finding students attempting to gather in restrooms during arrival and dismissal for social reasons or not respecting the facilities. The use of the restroom is a privilege and students who cannot respect facilities will be given other options to supervise their visit to the restroom.
We also have an opportunity to attend a DC United Soccer game this Wednesday, April 26, 2023, with discounted tickets. If you are interested, please use the following link and meet us at Audi Field. We are excited to partner with D.C. United for their Open Cup Match as they take on the Richmond Kickers. Cheer on the Black-and-Red as they begin their journey in North America's most historic soccer tournament, the US Open Cup! Educators, teachers, and families start at just $15 per ticket! Click U.S. Open Cup: D.C. United vs. Richmond Kickers (fevo.com) to purchase tickets for the match! Lastly, as a reminder school will be closed for all staff and students in Prince George’s County this Friday, April 21, 2023, in observance of Eid. Have a safe and wonderful weekend Tigers.

Congratulations to our hardworking scholars for continued success in mastering IXL reading and math skills. Way to Go!
Parents,
-please work with students to learn and/or review their 1st-grade sight words. Many of them already know these, so let’s move on to 2nd-grade sight words. Visit this site for word lists https://www.education.com/magazine/article/firstgradesightwords/
-Pollen season is Here! Please review safety concerns with students. For example, washing hands to prevent getting pollen into the eyes, etc.
-Adhering to rules, procedures, and routines-daily reminders are needed to help keep students safe at school and also at home.
Reading Updates
Please encourage and support scholars to read for at least 20 minutes each evening. After reading, engage learners to recall details from what was read. These past two weeks have been decoding words with inflectional endings (-ed, -s, -es), learning to construct questions before, during and after reading, as well as using illustrations and details to describe characters, setting, and event.
Making Connections is a comprehension strategy that students are learning to use. Therefore, as you read to, and with students, ask questions to help them make connections to their own ‘real life’ experiences. For example: “Does this remind you of something you've seen or done before?” Many reading skills are ongoing so students will continue learning and reviewing for the next week.
