Message From Principal Collins
Hello parents, Caregivers and Guardians,
Thank you all for coming and participating in the Star Lake/Evergreen Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. I enjoyed meeting so many of the alum. The scholars did a fantastic job speaking and conducting the tours of the building.
In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony, our 8th took the PSAT and our building the iReady reading and math assessments.
We have hot lunch provided every day for our scholars. We are asking that no Uber Eats or DoorDash be delivered during school. If scholars are late to lunch I will make sure they get something to eat from the cafeteria. Also, phones are once again becoming an issue. Cell phones are to be turned off and placed in their backpacks as soon as they come on campus. Teachers will let them use their classroom phones or they can come to the office if they need to get in touch with you. We have found when scholars are not on their phones they focus more on the learning aspect instead of Social Media. Thank you for your support with both of the items listed above.

How can we improve behavior and classroom management?
It is well known in education that what a teacher does in their classroom has more of an impact on student achievement than any other factor. Of all of the possible teacher actions, researchers have found that classroom management has the highest impact on student achievement. This makes total sense when you think about it. Students cannot learn in a classroom full of disruption and misbehavior, no matter how good the teaching is!
This week, I met with Evergreen teachers to discuss ways to implement tried-and-tested classroom management techniques. We talked about simple things, such as using eye contact to remind students that you are aware of their behavior and using positive praise and narration to acknowledge and reward good behaviors. We also talked about techniques that are a bit more complex. One area of focus of the training was how to break down instructions in advance of a given activity so that students are well-aware of what’s expected of them. I also emphasized the importance of having students practice class routines and norms on a weekly basis so that good behavior becomes automatic.
While our teachers will continue to build their capacity as classroom managers, I want to encourage parents and guardians in this community to regularly talk to your children about making good choices while at school. It is simply not true that school only starts to matter when you get to high school, because advanced learning is not possible without a strong grasp of the basics. When parents and guardians expect and require their children to maintain good behavior at school, you help us to achieve the safe and rigorous learning environment our community deserves.

Federal Way Public Schools Celebrates the Brand-New Star Lake and Evergreen schools with a Ribbon Cutting and Tours
Federal Way, Wash. — Federal Way Public Schools invited scholars, family, and the community to a joint ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the completion of the brand-new Star Lake Elementary and Evergreen Middle School on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. Both schools are the latest of eight schools to be rebuilt thanks to voter approval of the school construction bond in 2017. Guests enjoyed a formal ribbon-cutting program before participating in scholar-led building tours highlighting key areas of each school building.
The ribbon-cutting program included remarks by Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer, FWPS Board President Hiroshi Eto, and Evergreen and Star Lake scholars and principals, as well as videos showcasing building features and scholar reactions from each school.
“We could not be here today without our community, leaders, teachers, and students. It has taken all of us to be here, now,” shared Evergreen Student Body President, Scott Ingram. He continued, “Our new school demonstrates Federal Way’s shared vision and commitment to our youth and their bright futures.”
Planning, designing, and building each school was a collaborative effort led by FWPS Capital Projects team, CBRE, BN Builders, and McGranahan Architects. Through several design planning and engagement sessions with scholars, staff and the community, the resulting schools reflect the needs and concerns of all involved.
The schools share a unique design, with a few shared common areas, which include a sprawling library, Commons with an operable wall for separate cafeterias, and a Family Connection Center. Evergreen’s three-story wing allows each middle school grade to have its own level, and Star Lake’s two-story wing allows its youngest students quick access to all amenities on the first floor, while older students enjoy the second.
“Our new schools will serve as a hub for improved learning, and will enhance the student experience with embedded technology, flexible working spaces, and other thoughtful design implementations based on the latest research for scholar engagement and academic achievement.” shared Superintendent Dr. Pfeiffer during the program. “I'm excited for the thousands of young people who will enjoy the new schools now and over many years to come. Thank you for your voice, dedication, and investment.”
