The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—into teaching in high-need secondary schools in Georgia, Indiana, and New Jersey. Eligible applicants include current undergraduates, recent college graduates, midcareer professionals, and retirees who have majored in, or had careers in, STEM fields.
The Fellowship also works to change the way top teachers are prepared, partnering with colleges and universities that have agreed to provide Fellows with innovative, year-long classroom experiences, rigorous academic work, and ongoing mentoring.
The Fellowship
The Teaching Fellowship includes:
- admission to a master's degree program at a partner university
- preparation for teacher certification in science, mathematics or technology education
- extensive preparation for teaching in a high-need urban or rural secondary school for one full year prior to becoming the teacher-of-record in a science or math classroom
- a $30,000-$32,000 stipend, with tuition arrangements varying by campus in Georgia, Indiana, and New Jersey. (Once Fellows are certified teachers at the end of the first year, they obtain salaried employment in high-need schools.)
- support and mentoring throughout the three-year teaching commitment
- support of a cohort of WW Fellows passionate about science and math education
- lifelong membership in a national network of Woodrow Wilson Fellows who are intellectual leaders
The Commitment
As part of their commitment to ensuring the success of students in high-need secondary schools, Fellows teach for at least three years in an urban or rural school district. Continuation as a teacher of record is contingent on the Fellow's completing the master's degree and obtaining appropriate teaching licensure.
Eligibility
The Fellowship is open to college seniors, graduates, and career changers who:
- • have majored in and/or have a strong professional background in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or math);
- • demonstrate a commitment to the program and its goals;
- • have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency;
- • have attained, or expect to attain by June 30, 2016, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or its international equivalent (Note: Undergraduate degrees earned outside the U.S. are accepted if an approved credential evaluator declares the degree equivalent to an earned U.S. bachelor’s degree.);
- • a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale is preferred (Note: Candidates who can demonstrate excellence through other avenues will also be considered. All applications are considered in their entirety and selection is based on merit.)
Final Deadline to apply: Sunday, January 31, 2016

January 29, The Pritzker School of Medicine Experience in Research @ The University of Chicago
The Pritzker School of Medicine Experience in Research is an NIH-sponsored summer pipeline program held on the University of Chicago campus. Students apply from around the country to participate in a rigorous, mentored, and highly supportive experience, and are provided with on-campus housing as well as a generous stipend.
Eligibility requirements:
- Rising college seniors or students rising into a post baccalaureate program
- Applicants must be US citizens or have Permanent Resident status
- The program seeks students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or who represent groups that are known to be underrepresented in health related sciences and medicine.
The deadline for submission is January 29th, 2016. It is necessary to complete the online application to be considered for the program. More information can be found on the PSOMER webpage.
February 1, Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy (VSSA)
The VSSA hosts approximately 70 students each summer from institutions across the country. The VSSA offers research seminars, a wide range of enrichment activities and lectures as well as social activities for those undergraduates engaged in research.
There are two major tracks within the VSSA; the Basic Science Programs for undergraduates interested in careers in research (aspiring PhD and MD/PhD students), and the Undergraduate Clinical Research Internship Program for undergraduates who wish to pursue a career in medicine (aspiring MD and MD/PhD students). There are many options within the Basic Science Programs based on the student’s background and research interests. Participation in any one of the Summer Science Academy programs is a valuable learning experience that enhances a student’s skills and makes him or her more competitive for acceptance to frontline graduate programs.
For further information please visit their website.
February 15, Summer in Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) @ The University of Alabama
The purpose of this program is to give talented undergraduate students the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of intensive, hypothesis-drive laboratory research. This experience should help students make well informed decisions about future career plans. Previous research experience is not required. They especially welcome applications from students who are interested in research as a potential career, including students interested in PhD and MD/PhD programs. They accept fifteen students per summer into this program.
Eligibility:
- They expect applicants to SIBS to have completed at least their sophomore year of undergraduate coursework.
- Successful candidates will typically demonstrate grade point averages of 3.0 (“B”) or higher, especially in science, math, and related areas.

February 15, Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) @ The University of Alabama
The PARAdiGM program focuses on undergraduates from diverse and underrepresented minority backgrounds, and offers the opportunity to participate in the program for two summers. In addition to working in the laboratory of a faculty mentor with an actively funded biomedical research program, PARAdiGM participants will learn about careers in academic medical centers (AMCs) by shadowing clinician-investigators in their clinics, as well as on in-patient rounds. At the end of the first summer in the program, the students will write an abstract and participate in both a local and national poster presentation of their research results. The students will also receive instruction in essay writing, MCAT preparation, and critical career skills. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide undergraduate students with an understanding and appreciation of the biomedical research process so as to encourage them to pursue careers studying patients and their diseases after further postgraduate training in graduate and medical education. Previous research experience is not required in order to apply. The PARAdiGM program is especially useful for students who do not have local access to biomedical research and/or academic physician-scientist role models.
