Math
At the beginning of the month in Math 7, we designated two weeks for SOF workshop and focused on SOFs 7.1- EE.B.3, 7.1-EE.B.4a, and 7.1- EE.B.4b. During that time, students worked on their SOF checklist as well as met with their Math 7 teacher in small groups in order to relearn or review the skills necessary for the Standards Mastery. Furthermore, we are finishing the Ratios and Proportions Unit. Students learned to compute unit rates; recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities; and use proportional relationships to solve multi-step problems. Students are assessing for this chapter on Wednesday, March 2nd and Thursday, March 3rd.
In addition, students are starting the SOFs 7.RP.A.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
During the first half of the month in Advanced 2, students learned how to graph linear equations in slope intercept and standard form and then assessed all the skills learned in our Linear Equations unit. All scores are in Infinite Campus and students have the chance to reassess. Throughout the rest of February, students have applied their understanding of linear equations to solve systems of equations which consists of finding x and y through graphing the two equations or they can solve the system algebraically using substitution or elimination. We will be assessing this unit on Thursday, March 3.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
Throughout February, we also spent time learning about social and emotional skills such as collaboration, common courtesy, and positive communication and affirmations. We enjoyed taking time in Math to learn important skills that will benefit students now and in the future when they are adults. Here are some pictures of the fun activities we did in class to learn these lessons!
Literacy
This month in Literacy, students completed their work with SOF RI.7.1 - I can cite several pieces of evidence from a text to support an author’s claim. All students were assessed on academic vocabulary terms recently that went along with the standard as well. Overall, students did a fantastic job on the assessment!
The last few weeks, students have been using their citing evidence skills to find evidence for argument essays. Students were all asked to choose from a list of topics, write a claim, research their topic to find evidence to support their claim and write a six paragraph argumentative essay about their topic. Student essays included thesis statements and counterclaim paragraphs, which was a new skill for many students! Standards covered by essay are:
W.7.1 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
W.7.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
W.7.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision)
As always, Task Lists are assigned to students every Monday and due every Sunday night. We appreciate your support at home keeping your student on track when necessary!
Social Studies
Throughout the last month, students have been studying the civilization of ancient China and have been focusing on how the isolation of the Chinese dynasties created a myriad of different philosophies and developments with limited influence from other civilizations.
Throughout this unit so far, students have learned about the geography of China and how it impacted invasions, the major belief systems, various Chinese dynasties, and most recently, the benefits and costs of constructing the Great Wall of China.
Looking ahead into March and April, our upcoming units are on Mesoamerican civilizations and Medieval Europe.
Mrs. Schiessl would also like to give a special shoutout to Brody Iczkowski for placing in the top 25 out of thousands of students across the country participating in FanSchool’s Olympic Challenge. Awesome job with your medal predictions!!
As always, please be sure to check Infinite Campus for the most up-to-date information about missing assignments and scores on summative tasks.
Science
This month in science, students wrapped up plant vascular system and moved on to plant reproduction Students got to dive in and learn about:
Parts of the seed and their functions
Male structure of a flower
Female structure of a flower
Flowering plant reproduction process
Pollination and pollinators
Students were able to dissect the flower in order to see the difference in male and female structures. In addition, students were able to work with the dissection tools in order to practice for when we dissect the frog at the end of the school year. Students participated in a jigsaw activity to learn about pollination syndrome. Then, students wrote a practice CER (Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning) to support why certain flower’s traits vary by the type of pollinator that will visit them. Students had the support of their jigsaw activity, the book, and graphic organizers to organize their thinking.
This upcoming month, students will be working on fossils, mass extinction, and classifying organisms.
As always, students will be provided their full unit (SLP) or weekly learning plans which are used by students in outlining in-class activities, labs, lessons and our guided practice (workshop/homework). Please be sure to check in regularly with your child and preview their learning pathway.
