Meet our New Assistant Principal
April 16, 2021
Dear Graves Family,
My name is Oscar Guillén, the new Assistant Principal at Graves Dual Language Academy. I am very excited to be part of the Graves learning community. Although I am new to Summit School District 104, I have worked in the Chicago Public School system for 14 years.
During that time, I taught grades Kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th.
As the new Assistant Principal, I want to continue to support and advance the amazing work that has been done here. I want to thank Ms. Arteaga for granting me the opportunity to assist her. I will work alongside her and the staff to carry out the school's dedication to inspire life long learners in a safe and nurturing environment.
One of my goals is to ensure that the school environment is a safe and respectful place where our students can continue to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
I am a firm believer in the connection between the school and home. So, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free contact me. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Guillén
Assistant Principal

Notes from our Social Worker Ms. Calderon- (Emotions 3)
Parents and Guardians,
Hello! In this newsletter we will be discussing what we can do to calm ourselves down when we are feeling upset. Like I mentioned before, all emotions are normal. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help your child continue to learn about emotions, through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! Thank you and have a great day!
Learn About It
Here are videos to help children learn about different types of breathing. They can be found on youtube:

Practice It
Here are some examples of what you can do to practice talking about their emotions:
PK-4th: Practice different breathing exercises that they can do when they are upset. Practice other ways to calm your body down.
Talk About It
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about emotions with your child:
•How do you feel when you're angry?
•What do you feel when you're frustrated?
•What makes you feel better?
•What can you do if you feel angry or frustrated at school?
