Welcome back! I hope you all had a very restful break. As we head into December and much colder weather please help your child dress for the weather. We go out for a 30 minute recess and a 20 minute lunch recess every day. Kids should have a good winter coat, snowpants, boots, gloves, and a hat. If you need support getting any of these materials please reach out and we will work to help you get what you need. We also have a bunch of coats and hats and gloves in our lost and found already so if you are missing something please stop in and check. You can come in any time to take a look, the lost and found is in our lobby.

Mrs. Richert has been busy working with students to prepare for their show. If you have a child in Hoopers and Hoppers their performance is Tuesday 11/29 (tomorrow) at 4:00 in the gym.

The JYNO Club will begin Thursday, December 8th - February 9th, 2023 The club will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:00 in the Harborview gym.

Students will learn and practice the following JYNO events: One Foot High Kick, Two Foot High Kick, Alaskan High Kick, Scissor Broad Jump, Inuit Stick Pull, and The Seal Hop. Participants will have the opportunity to compete at our annual JYNO tournament between several of the local elementary schools on February 10th, 2023. While learning how to excute each event they will also learn the history and purpose behind them. Students must turn in a permission slip to Mrs. Richert in order to participate.

We are always looking for volunteers to run stations for our practices. Please let Mrs. Richert know if you are interested. nicole.richert@juneauschools.org

The district gives banchmark assessments 3 times each year to monitor student progress.

One test is the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test which is delivered via computer and consists of Math K-5, Reading K-5, and Language Usage 2-5. This same assessment was given in the fall and we compare the fall scores to the winter scores to look for growth. Please help your children be prepared by getting a good nights sleep and breakfast each day. We do have free breakfast this year so students can always eat here as well.

The other assessment we give is the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). This is a reading assessment that checks phonological awareness K-1 and decoding/fluency K-5. We use these assessment results to monitor progress and to help provide interventions as needed.

As some of you may have heard, we have received the results of our state testing (AKStar) that was done last April. This was the first time this particular assessment was given and it was created by the same company that does the MAP testing. NWEA is the company. The goal last year was to gather data to help guide the further development of the test as well as assess grade level expectations. MAP testing is based on student progress and give a RIT (Rausch Interval) score for students. The MAP test is NOT a summative assessment like the AKStar. The AKStar is aligned to the Alaska State Standards by Grace Level and the MAP assessement measures all standards at all grade levels and pushes as far as the student can go (so a student could complete problems well above their grade level). MAP is a measure of what your child knows how to do, AKStar is a measure showing if your child is able to complete work at their grade level. The AKStar results are not where we want them to be and we did expect some variance due to the test being newly created and also due to our year of distance education. The results are not current (again it was given last April) but it does give us guidance in how to use all of our other assessement results (namely the MAP assessments) to improve our overall instruction and increase student learning. We should be getting more detailed test results for our students and will share that with you soon.
