Hatherly Happenings

We recognize the importance of working together. On the afternoon of October 15, Colleen Franke, School Psychologist, and Caitlin Burns, Educator, will be meeting to facilitate a group discussion. As a result of the meeting, future topics will be determined so they may share their expertise. We hope you will mark your calendar to join them on Friday, October 15, at 2:30-3:00 pm. This week's book, The Big Umbrella, jumped right into our new PBIS theme of the month, inclusion. The story is about a a rainy day and a big umbrella that welcomes everyone to take shelter from the rain. This story illustrates how friendship, inclusion, and kindness work together.

The elementary schools in Scituate have implemented PBIS for many years. The focus of the initiative is establishing expectations, explicitly teaching the expectations, establishing a positive reinforcement system and making any necessary adjustments using restorative consequences.

With the help of two representatives from each class, Hatherly students worked with Mrs. Franke and Mrs. Dempsey to determine school rules. This is the first step in PBIS. This week the Hatherly staff analyzed lots of information about each individual student and designed both intervention and enrichment opportunities. This process happens in September, January, and June. The growth of students is examined approximately six weeks after these meetings to ensure instruction is having a positive impact. The small instruction is delivered using a W.I.N. Block model.

W.I.N block is a time where all students are working in small grade level groups that target specific instructional strategies. W.I.N stands for: What I Need. Each group has a designated thirty minute block of time, Monday-Thursday, where students are grouped for skill instruction activities based on meeting their individual needs and strengths. The W.I.N. groups are fluid and are formed based on current data collected by teachers. We utilize the expertise of our classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, and paraprofessionals to form and guide these groups. Students and staff are very excited about this new addition to the schedule.
