Senators are SOC II Champs!
Congratulations to our football team for clenching the SOC II Championship with a 14-7 win over Wheelersburg. This is the first SOC title in 14 years and the first win versus Wheelersburg since 2011. Senators football went 9-1 in the regular season and 5-0 in conference play. Their season is still unfinished, however. Senators will play again at home versus Columbus Academy on Nov. 4 in the OHSAA Regional Quarterfinals game at 7pm.
Best wishes in tournament play, gentlemen! #WeAreWest

FFA Attends National Convention
Students (pictured above) from the Portsmouth West-SCCTC FFA attended the 95th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were accompanied by fellow FFA members from Minford-SCCTC and South Webster-SCCTC FFAs. The National FFA Convention & Expo is all about growing the next generation of leaders. Students found inspiration and direction to become a leader and influencer, ready to make an impact. During this event, students were able to meet with several dozen colleges, challenge themselves through student workshops, and introduce themselves to the next innovations in agriculture. Members also had an opportunity to tour the prestigious Reproduction Specialty Group facilities. Portsmouth West-SCCTC FFA President, Emily Scaff, states, “attending the convention is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that several of us have had the chance to do more than once. Attending the convention always inspires and breeds motivation in our members.”
Seniors attend SSU College Fair
Senior students (all pictured above) traveled to Shawnee State University on Oct. 17 to attend their college fair. 20+ representatives from various universities and technical schools were present and discussed post-graduation options. Thanks to Mr. Rapp for purchasing lunch for our students! Seniors will be traveling to Ohio University in Athens on Nov. 2 to experience a larger campus setting.
CCP Natural Science
Students in Dr. Harvey's CCP Natural Science classes (pictured above, below, and left) are working on a Conifer Observation Activity where they are detailing the similarities and differences in ten local conifer tree species including pines, hemlock, junipers, spruces, and more. Students will then use those similarities and differences to create a dichotomous key and use this scientific tool to help others learn how to identify the conifers by species.
History Students Use Primary Sources
Mrs. Callihan's American History classes (pictured right and below) studied historical events by comparing first-hand accounts of the Wright Brothers' first flight on Dec. 17, 1903. They, then, compared the accounts to a secondary source, a newspaper story, that appeared the next day. Students mapped the flight of the Wright Brothers to visualize the distance of each of the 4 flights of the Wright Brothers at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, NC, on Dec. 17, 1903. Using their math skills they figured out the distance and placed signs that marked the four flights. Sign one: Flight 120 feet, Sign two: 175 feet, Sign three: 200 feet, Sign 4: 856 feet.
Anatomy and Bio Students Study Cell Membrane
Anatomy and Biology students have been studying the cell membrane. The cell membrane, also called the plasma membrane, is found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment. It is made up of a phospholipid bilayer (represented by balloons) with protein channels throughout (pool noodles).
