A Note from the Principal

Dear Families,

February is Kindness Month! It's wonderful to see the great kindness that our scholars, community and staff share with one another. Thank you to our homeroom volunteers for helping to organize fabulous Valentine Parties this week. The scholars LOVED their party time together. For quarter 3, CES will be focusing on the Character Counts Pillars of Caring and Fairness. On Friday, February 28, we invite our scholars to wear kindness clothing such as a shirt with a kind quote, motivating words and/or even wearing red to symbolize kindness. We are so proud of our CES scholars and want to recognize the importance of showing kindness each and every day. Enjoy your long weekend!

Be the Change and End Childhood Hunger Campaign

Your spare change can change a child's life.

Help Blessings in a Backpack fight childhood hunger by providing food for local kids when school meals are unavailable.

Be the Change containers are now located in all classrooms and the front office at CES.

Scholars are invited to bring in spare change to support this campaign.

We will be collecting for the entire month of February.

Scholar News

Congratulations to Saanvi Kakarla for her recent advocacy in Annapolis. Saanvi, fourth grader, at CES shared a presentation on the importance of compositing. Her presentation will hopefully further reinforce the importance of composting and assist in gaining additional funding for the efforts occurring in our local schools. Way to go Saanvi!

There is an early bird special from now until February 29th with yearbook costing $24.00. After this date until March 1st, the cost is $26.00 for a basic yearbook purchase.

CES Attendance Awareness

All Maryland Public Schools receive a “Report Card” which is compiled using the school’s performance in various categories. Schools are expected to maintain an overall attendance rate of at least 96% overall for all students. Maintaining a positive attendance pattern is essential for student success.


So far this year, CES attendance performance includes:

September - 97.7%

October - 97.2%

November - 97%

December - 95.5%

January - 93.8%


Please continue to be mindful about your scholar’s absences and try to limit absences to illnesses only.

FCPS Magnet Information

Magnet applications for Grades 2, 3 and 4 are open through February 28th!

Magnet applications for the 2020-2021 school year are now being accepted for students in current Grades 2, 3 and 4. Additional Information and online applications may be found

at: https://www.fcps.org/academics/elemmagnetprg


Completed magnet program applications are due, Friday, February 28, 2020, to allow schools time to administer necessary assessments and process other paperwork.

Grade 5 MISA Testing

To the parents of 5th grade students,


5th grade students will be taking their state science assessment (MISA) in March.


The original testing window was March 9th-13th, 2020 with make-up dates the following week.


The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has moved the window to March 23rd-27th, 2020 with make up dates the following week.


Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or vacations during the mornings of the new testing window.


If students miss a testing session they will be pulled another day for make-up testing which may cause them to miss instruction.

We are proud to announce that Mrs. Michelle Packard, first grade teacher, is the FCPS Teacher of the Year representative for Centerville Elementary School! Mrs. Packard is an excellent choice and we are excited for the opportunities this honor will provide. Thank you Mrs. Packard for all you do for our school, scholars and community.

Centerville Elementary Kindergarten Registration

It's hard to believe that it is time to start planning ahead for our youngest scholars. Kindergarten Registration will officially begin March 18th. Scholars who turn age 5 on or before September 1, 2020 should register for Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year. Your prompt registration will provide us time to plan for staffing so please don't delay!


Registration Dates for Centerville Elementary School in coming Kindergarten Scholars

*Beginning March 18th-remainder of the school year from 9:30am-2:30pm each day at Centerville Elementary front office

*A special evening registration will be available on Wednesday, April 15 from 5-7pm at Centerville Elementary front office


Please bring the following to the registration session:

*proof of birth (birth certificate, passport, hospital certificate of birth)

*immunization record to date

*proof of residency (provide one of these: current property tax bill, current rental agreement, current utility bill for water, gas or electric. Phone bills cannot be accepted)


Please allow about 30 minutes to complete paperwork on site.

Urbana Elementary: Incoming Kindergarten Registration

Susan Welch, 2020-2021 secretary for Urbana Elementary will be holding registration sessions at Centerville Elementary and Urbana Elementary@Sugarloaf. Families that are slated to attend Urbana Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year may attend any of the registration dates and locations to enroll scholars that will be new to FCPS.


Please bring the following to the registration session:

* Proof of birth (birth certificate, passport, hospital certificate of birth)

*Immunization Records

·*Proof of residency (provide one of these: current property tax bill, current rental bill, current utility bill for water, gas, or electric)
