School Reopening Update
Students Returning to Campus
Special Day Class students, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and 1st grade students have returned to our campuses. The new LASD+ program is also up and running at Santa Rita and Almond, providing in-person learning experiences for targeted students who need substantial academic support and could benefit from supervised distance learning. Our 2nd and 3rd grade students enrolled in the Blended Learning program will return to campuses November 9. We're pleased that operations are running safely and smoothly as we've brought students and teachers back to classrooms.
Report Cards and Teacher Conferences
Report cards and teacher conferences are coming up in November. Conferences for our TK-8th grade students will be held via Google Meet this year throughout the month of November. TK-6th grade teachers will meet with all students and families who are enrolled in their classes as of November 9, including new students and families. Junior high school families will be contacted directly by one or more teachers if a conference is needed.
Social-Emotional Survey
LASD is also conducting an important Social Emotional survey at this difficult time of distance learning and a global pandemic. We invite parents/guardians and staff to participate in the survey here.
Virtual School and Blended Learning Enrollment
As we prepare to bring students back to campuses, some of our families are choosing to switch their child's program from in-person learning to Virtual School. This shift may cause some changes to teaching assignments to accommodate the shifting student population. Parents and staff will be notified soon if and when any changes are necessary. Most importantly, our dedicated and experienced teachers are poised to be flexible and prepared to teach in virtual and in-person environments in this ever-changing educational environment.
6th-8th Grade Instructional Planning
With planning underway, our principals and administrative team are collaborating with teachers to meet students' social, emotional and academic needs within the health and safety guidelines set forth by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. Working groups of teachers are assembled to ensure the plan meets the needs of all students. The Board will receive a presentation at its November 9 meeting regarding the instructional plan for 6th-8th grade. We will invite parents and staff to join us for Town Hall meetings later in November.
Challenges Ahead
LASD is continuing to recruit and hire substitute teachers, and providing the comprehensive health and safety training they need to provide in-person and online instruction. With the shifts of students between programs, we may need to move teachers and will do our best to minimize disruptions for students and staff. We are working to identify more staff to support our Supervised Distance Learning program for the children of LASD staff as well as our LASD+ program. Finally, we are working to analyze student progress this year through important assessments that will help identify academic support to address any learning loss.
For more information, please review the presentation for item H.1.
Student Attendance
Overall student attendance--even in our distance learning and blended learning environment--is very strong, with average 7 day attendance at 98.77%. We thank our families for their partnership in continuing to help their children engage in their education in challenging circumstances.
LASD is very focused on the small number of students with chronic absences. Principals and teachers are working together to address the needs of these students, to determine if they could benefit from additional academic or social-emotional support, in addition to in-person learning through the LASD + program.
For more information, please review item H.2. on agenda online.
