Question of the Week
A collection of answers to our most commonly asked questions
What is the district doing to plan for fall re-opening?
If the Alameda County Public Health Department permits us to open fully with no restrictions, we will open fully at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.
We understand that the community wants to know how we are preparing for a full re-opening if we find ourselves in the best-case scenario, and our contingency plans if we are not in the best case scenario. Superintendent Booker, the Board and administrative leaders are currently deep in the process of planning for several possible scenarios for the fall, including:
- Scenario 1: The U.S. attains herd immunity and the Alameda County Public Health Department allows us to bring all students at all grade levels back on campus with no restrictions.
- Scenario 2: Covid-19 is still circulating but at low enough levels that the Alameda County Public Health Department allows us to bring all students at all grade levels back on campus with minimal restrictions such as mask wearing and disinfecting protocols.
- Scenario 3: Covid-19 is circulating at higher levels and Alameda County Public Health Department allows us to bring students back, but requires 4-feet of social distancing.
- Scenario 4: Covid-19 is circulating at higher levels and Alameda County Public Health Department allows us to bring students back, but requires 6-feet of social distancing.
- Scenario 5: New variants of Covid-19 that are resistant to current vaccines or have a higher health risk to children circulate at high enough levels that Alameda County Public Health Department does not allow us to provide in-person learning.
On March 24, the Board will have a discussion about the contingencies required under each of these scenarios. We encourage the community to attend this meeting to hear the discussion on what each scenario means for our fall plans.

We understand how eager everyone is to know the answer to this question, and we are eager to answer it! Unfortunately we cannot give a definitive "yes" because our ability to open all classes for all students 5 days a week depends on COVID infection rates in Alameda County on the first day of school and the approval of the Alameda County Health Department. We do understand how frustrating it is to hear that answer again because we know that parents need some level of certainty to plan. We can say this: if the County Health Department permits us to open fully, we will open fully at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.
A number of community members testified at the February 24 school board meeting on this topic and we appreciate hearing their perspectives. Superintendent Booker announced at the board meeting that the topic of fall re-opening will be on the Board agenda at an upcoming meeting soon, and at that time the Board will have an in-depth discussion detailing factors that are influencing the District's planning for fall.
