March 2023
Dear Friends and Families of LBW
Marching into Spring!
Thank you for attending conferences this past February. This was an exciting time to see the progress of each of the students at this point in the school year. Without a doubt, this time is valuable for all of us. Thank you again!
Kindergarten / Begindergarten
As a friendly reminder, we have already sent out information to our future LBW Students starting this fall. If you missed signing up or haven’t received your packet, please contact Linnea at 995-3090. We cannot wait to see our new students at the end of March for our special Jumpstart Night!
Smarter Balance
All third-fifth grade students will be taking our state test in April. As as reminder, all parents in these grade levels were given information to write positive notes to our students that they will read before their first test. Please return those items to your classroom teacher by Wednesday, March 16. Also, a detailed classroom schedule for testing will be coming home with your child soon. Please avoid scheduling any appointments or trips during that time if at all possible. We know our students do best when they are with their teaching in their regular routine rather than making up their tests at a later time. Thank you for your help with this.
Snow Day Learning Packets/Last Day of School
As you know, unfortunately, we have had a few more snow days as of recently. In light of that, please know that our last day of school is Friday, May 26. We have already completed day 1 of our snow day learning packets. If we have any more additional snow days, our students are expected to complete the sequential days of the snow day learning packets at home and no more days will be added to our calendar after May 26.
We appreciate your efforts to continue to keep our students safe by sending their winter gear when it is appropriate. At times it is hard to know, but we want our students to be prepared. As a reminder, we do go outside for recess if it is above zero each day.
Have a wonderful March!
Mrs. Roth
Information about Screen Time
Research from mayoclinic.org
Overall, it is suggested on average that children Kindergarten through 5th grade are limited to 1 to 2 hours daily on screens.
Obesity, lack of sleep, attention and behavior problems have been linked to too much screen time.
Screen usage can be positive if limited and monitored by parents.
“Tech- Free” zones (ie. supper table) or a day of the week to be “tech-free” to promote limits of screen time is encouraged.
Attention former L.B. Williams Students
L.B. Williams Alumni Scholarship
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a graduating senior at Mitchell Senior High, have attended L.B. for at least 3 years and be pursuing any higher level of education upon graduation.
The candidate must complete the Mitchell Community Scholarship Application form found at www.lbw.themitchellkernels.com. Applications are due April 3rd.
Notes for the Nurse
Cold and flu season is in full swing. In order to help our students stay healthy we want to remind students to wash their hands often and thoroughly throughout the day. As a reminder, all students need to be fever free for 24 hours before they return to school. We understand this can be a challenge sometimes, but it is an important way to keep illness from spreading.
Also, as students sometimes receive prescriptions or need over the counter medicines during this time, please take a moment to remind yourself of our medication policy. If we give any meds here, we need to have paperwork filled out with an original bottle with a prescription label. If a parent needs to give an over the counter medication they are welcome to stop in the office and we are happy to call the student to the office.
Thank you for using your good judgment about when your child can come to school or needs to take a day of rest. Keeping everyone healthy is important to us!

Reminder
- Please call the office before 8:45 if your child is late or will not be here during the school day. 995-3090
- We will be distributing fliers, classroom info. and important items every Friday. Please be sure to check your child's backpack.
- If you have a new phone number or address, please update your information in the office. This includes work phone number, personal phone numbers, and emergency contacts. When we have an urgent situation, it is vital that we are able to contact a parent. Sending a note with your child works, as does calling the office. Thanks in advance.
- Winter is here! Our weather can change quickly in the state, so we want to be prepared for an emergency dismissal. Please be sure that we have updated information in the office as to what your plans will be in the case of an emergency early dismissal. For example, if your student typically rides the bus, we need to know if you want them to ride the bus if we dismiss early. Thanks for keeping up informed!
Thank You
We were excited to have Junior Achievement (JA) volunteers in our school once again! JA volunteers shared their knowledge with our students about careers, money, owning a business, and ethics.
JA volunteers teach engaging and interactive lessons while sharing their own career journey. By sharing their personal and professional stories it allows students to start making a connection between their schoolwork and their future careers. We appreciate the time JA volunteers spend in the classroom making an impact on South Dakota’s future workforce!
JA strives to empower students to achieve their dreams and seeks to instill hope for a promising future. This year, nearly 2,000 JA classroom volunteers have committed to teaching JA programs with the hope of reaching over 55,000 South Dakota students.
Please extend a special thank you to the volunteers and teachers listed below who participated in JA during the 2022-23 school year. If you are interested in sharing your knowledge and business experience with students in our community, please click here to see a list of open JA classes still in need of volunteers this year. Or, if you would like to sponsor a student for $25, please contact the JA office at (605)336-7318 or jasd@ja.org.
